The niceness is especially dangerous when someone on a four-lane (in town with lots of traffic) stops short to wave someone oncoming to turn left in front of them, when there is another lane of traffic next to them with the right of way that has no intention of stopping or any warning that they will need to. It could be a fatal broadside collision.

AMEN!

Situational awareness, something I was very close to in the aviation world, transfers to the driving world. It ought to be taught, that everywhere around you something is going on, and you need to be aware of every vehicle, intersecting road, traffic signals etc within a quarter mile of you.

An example if my figures are correct, at 60 mph you are traveling 88 feet per second 36 feet short of a football field in three seconds. Things happen fast, and texting is just one example of how people pay so little regard to something that can so easily kill or injure yourself, or others on the road.
