I didn’t know Ilya was effeminate.

Well, It didn’t look like she actually did anything. It gave you the IDEA of what she was about to do without her actually doing it. Very Hitchcockian actually. I had to back up and watch it again to make sure that what it sounded like the lady was accusing her of was actually what she was accusing her of.

Umm... hate to say this, but sounds like we’re about the same age and it was uncomfortably like that for me in my family. Actually not until later, and my dad was no Jon Hamm and my mom was no Jan Jones. Although Jon Hamm did go to the same private school in St. Louis where my uncle used to teach. Probably had him for class, but that’s another story. We were pretty happy in 1965, as far as I knew, but there was that incident in which Mom flew off to Wichita for a long weekend. Nobody was talking about why.

I watched it, and I love it.

About time the toll of divorce gets a public hearing. My mom was Betty Draper. Period. My mom, however, was stoned a good bit of the time.

Dad worked three jobs.

Thank God for the Catholic Church and the Boy Scouts of America. I avoided the meth and coke habit my younger brother picked up. My youngest is five years younger, and had the benefit of some correction enforced by my Dad on my mom.

I hope the touch on all the new age crap that made the rounds at the time. EST and TM were big in my house. I have friends in my company whose parents were part of a Christian commune, which was more commune and less Christian.

I think it demonstrates how the world of Leave It To Beaver, and the world that led to the one we have today actually coexisted, and one sort of crashed into the other. It shows people who don’t swear, and always dress nicely, yet smoke, drink, chase tail, drunk drive, smoke dope, whatever.

Everyone in America wasn’t dissipating at the rate of these characters, but Madison Avenue had a reputation for this kind of behavior. And everybody WAS coming home and knocking back a few drinks every night, and the divorce rate DID skyrocket.

Guess that’s the difference between us. It is slow, no doubt, but I think they are building a nice story. I don’t need a cliched statement about how bad life was in the 50s or early 60s every minute that I see with MM. On the other hand, Rubicon has made a couple of veiled political ignorant comments.

I just realized - it’s Gone With The Wind. A beautiful civilization, a way of living, GONE, wiped out to be replaced by... what?

Have you always been this obtuse, or is it something that required a tremendous amount of effort?

Ah. The ad hominem attack -- the last, cowardly option open to those who have no real argument.

Spare me the righteous indignation, hypocrite. TWO POSTS in a row, you lay ridiculously unfounded straw-man fallacies on me, then you bitch about an ad hominem.

Get over yourself. You're neither intelligent, nor "edgy".

Well, I’m not so sure they are trying to make it good. For ex, everyone smokes like a chimney; women are routinely demeaned, and the ad guys lie through their teeth. I was pretty young, but I don’t remember the 50s and early 60s that way. It was a pretty good time.

Betty is the “Hitchcock blonde”—this is obvious to me, from her hairstyle, carriage, upper-cate tone. Think Grace Kelly, Tippi Hedren...

I walked in on my parents once when I was little. I thought they were “wrestling”.

re: the artifacts of nostalgia bring back long-forgotten memories)))

That's well-put. And that's the biggest reason I tune in--they do a very good job of capturing the era.

Do you remember when we all casually littered, threw trash everywhere? There's a picnic scene in MM when the Draper family flips the trash onto the ground from the blanket. Embarrassed to say, I remember that from childhood.

The story of Draper's double-life is the most hilarious, stupid soap opera gimmick--secret identity! Next we'll have amnesia and long-lost illegitimate children.

After the fifteenth or sixteenth time reading your posts, we get it. The message is stale, like an obama campaign speech given over and over and over.

I hope they used a double for this little girl.

Most of it was a closeup Sally's face, mostly biting her lip. Enough to give the viewer the sense of what was going on but nothing that was really exploitive.
