'Big Mama' shuts down oven for good

Brenda "Big Mama" Franklin is finished frying chicken and cooking greens in her House of Southern Cuisine on Liberty Avenue, Downtown.

The Garfield woman closed her restaurant Monday and posted two hand-written notes on the front doors today thanking her loyal customers, praising God and excoriating the Pittsburgh Parking Authority for levying parking fines against her that she said sapped her restaurant's modest revenues.

"Due to parking issues beyond my control I am forced to close. However, I'll be relocating to another state," Franklin wrote. "I've been targeted by the Parking Authority, which makes it very hard for my customers to park."

Franklin has not been targeted by parking enforcement agents, said David Onorato, executive director of the Pittsburgh Parking Authority.

I’ve grown to love Pitt. more and more since our convention moved there in ‘06. In fact when I got back home to New England I felt sorry I had to leave. I enjoyed the whole
area, though the rest. is gone now. Speaking of which,
every year we walk en masse (24 of us, usually) a mile down
Smithfield St. to the Buca di Beppo at Station Square and we have a blast—great food, wacky pictures on the wall—of course Buca is in many other cities, too, but we enjoy
our visits.

And the fireworks last yr from the convention ctr
roof were fun.

Dan DeCarlo (Archie Comics/Josie)

Did he address the inclusion of a homosexual character in the Veronica comic book? There are no good comic books for kids any more. Harvey (Richie Rich, Casper) and Fawcett (Dennis the Menace) are pretty much gone. DC and Marvel markets to adults. And now Archie has to go over to the other side in the culture war.

Franklin has not been targeted by parking enforcement agents, said David Onorato, executive director of the Pittsburgh Parking Authority.

David Onorato--would that be the brother of our dear County CEO who's running for the Senate?

If I could live in a cartoon universe, I would want one drawn by Dan DeCarlo.

“Oh roar a roar for Nora,
Nora Alice in the night,
for she has seen Aurora Borealis
burning bright.
A furor for our Nora,
and applaud Aurora’s scene,
for where throughout the summer
has our Borealis been?”

“The whole thing seems sketchy to me.”

Does that mean we shouldn’t pencil you in for the next one?

They built it, with corporate donations, etc., but now the money dried up and they’re moaning about possibly closing (after 1 yr!)

Business plan, what's that? operating expenses, what are those? Whadda you mean it won't continuously rain donations?

No. But it could be the brother of our dear County CEO who is running for PA Governor.

Indeed! there have been a couple TV specials based on Pogo.
One was done by Chuck Jones of Looney Tunes fame and was,
maybe still is, on Youtube.

This was awhile back, maybe 2001 or 02 when the convention was in Philadelphia, and he died a year or so later.

He was there with his wife Jocelyn
who inspired “Josie” (at least the name). Anyway this was
well before this controversy

wore T shirts saying “Big Mama’s For Obama”.

Why didn’t Big Moma contact “Big Obama” about her problem. I thought he could do anything, according to the voters.

“However, I’ll be relocating to another state,”

***

All she really has to do is open in the suburbs. Fewer parking problems.

There was a time when everyone went to downtown. We had numerous department stores, movie theaters, many restaurants and so on. Today we only have Macy’s, no more movie theaters (except for some artsy joint on Liberty Avenue), and the restaurants are generally overpriced and not all that good. These days, downtown Pittsburgh is a gawd-awful place to have a retail business. Lousy parking, constant construction and detours, and perpetual traffic gridlock. And then there is the crime — people shoot at each other even in broad daylight. I go downtown only to transfer to another bus to take me to the doctor. I won’t just go to town to shop. Give me a shopping mall or center.
