Mushroom hunter "massacre" claims 18 lives in Italy

MILAN Aug 29 (Reuters) - At least 18 mushroom-lovers have been killed in accidents while hunting for their favourite fungi in the mountains and forests of northern Italy.

Mountain rescuers say eager mushroom seekers are abandoning safety procedures as they don camouflage and hunt in darkness to protect coveted troves, la Repubblica newspaper reported on Sunday.

"There is too much carelessness. Too many people don't give a darn about the right rules and unfortunately this is the result," Gino Comelli, head of the Alpine rescue service in northwest Italy's Valle di Fassa, told the newspaper.

I tried to warn them that this would happen after generations of only picking the slow and stupid mushrooms. Now they have wily killer mushrooms to deal with.

Aren’t guns a bit of overkill in hunting down mushrooms?

Another Deadliest Catch TV show could be in the works.

They could contrast a fishing boat on 40 foot Arctic seas; with a mushroom hunter wandering the forests of Europe!

"as they don camouflage"

Is the mushroom's eyesight that good? Are they allowed to use tree stands, or just ground blinds?

Let us applaud our Italian brethren in their spiritual and material pursuit of gastronomic ectasy. To die for mushrooms is a sacrifice of commendable honor and taste.

It seems no human endeavor or chore is too mundane or dull to preclude a Discovery, History (was so much better with wall to wall Hitler documentaries), or TLC show about it. Oops. Gotta go. Mall Cops is on.

All kidding aside, we used to hunt mushrooms in Colorado. Knew a lot of mushroom collectors who would sneak off, back track, park miles away to keep their grounds secret.

If you think guns are not involved in Mushroom Hunting, just check of the Mushroom Season in Montana, very few years go by that they don’t have a shoot up.

I predict a name change. Pawn Stars and Ice Road Truckers don't really qualify as history. I suggest "The Stupid Ass Reality Show Full of Bleeped Out Words Channel"

And Lisa on Ice Road Truckers deserves her own show.

Back in the 70’s I had a party out at my place.

One idiot showed up, I didn't even know him, and he decided to go off in one the cow pastures to look for mushrooms for mushroom tea.

My old man had done one of the most boneheaded moves he had ever done, and bought a bunch of cattle from the Texas prison system.

Here's a warning to everyone. If a cow is too hot headed for the Texas prison system to fool with, it's too hot headed to put on your property.

Anyway, middle of the night, this idiot wandered into the pasture where we kept these hot headed cattle.

How many times that idiot got himself run over by a cow before he got back to his car I don't know.

I do know my brother and I had to go out there in the middle of the night and wrestle with that cow to get it's head out of his car window.

Or Animal Planet (Fungus Planet???) could do Mushroom Wars.

Captain Paul Watson, having sunk every vessel put under his command including a pair of water wings, now patrols the woodlands of the world to interfere with the wild mushroom trade. Watch his band of hippies hide in ambush in poison ivy. Watch them stumble about in the night in the woods. Watch them argue about whether treating athlete's foot is a hypocritical abandonment of their crusade. In a special episode, watch Paul Bethune leap onto the SUV of some suburban mushroom hunters who earlier had run over his carbon fiber, ethanol powered motor scooter which he left parked in the middle of the road.
