Meeting on Bear Kill Limit

The largest of more than a dozen public meetings on a proposal to increase the bear kill limit forced state Game Commission members to come up with a last-minute strategy on how so many eager New Mexicans would get a chance to voice their opinion.

Hundreds of people from all over the state traveled to Albuquerque Saturday [August 28] to speak on the Game and Fish Department's contentious proposal, which would up the bear kill limit by 80 percent over the next four years.

More than 240 people asked to speak on the matter. In the end, about 30 people were allowed to speak.

On one end, dozens of ranchers and hunters approve of the proposal, saying that bears are major predators that kill their livestock and affect their livelihood. There are even some who say the increase is too modest.

On the other end, there are those who fear the increase, which would change the current bear kill limit from 406 to 733, will decimate the bear population and have long-term negative effects on the state.
