In addition to gunfire over the weekend, deputies were dispatched to what could have been an even more dramatic situation in the 7000 block of Van Belle Road. That's where the Sheriff's office says two crates of explosives were found containing mortars and howitzers.

Nothing unusual about gunfire in the Yakima Valley of Washington state because of the large illegal immigrant population. But, where did the mortars and "howitzers" come from. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't a howitzer a gun and not an explosive. I have yet to find a follow up to this story, so if anyone is in the know, please fill me in.

Think the folks in Yakima would vote for a WA style SB1070?

Absolutely, but they are way outnumbered by the lefties in Seattle. I would like to see the east half of the state split off to form a new state. It has been tried in the past.

Yakima Firing Center is a major training area for combat units at Ft. Lewis.

“mortars” as in fireworks
“howitzers” probably something like above that was past the vocabulary of the reporter.
It never ceases to amaze me at the stupidity of the average AP reporter.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't a howitzer a gun and not an explosive.A Howitzer is a cannon. A Mortar is a small, muzzle-loaded weapon that shoots shells. It may be they found cases of Howitzer and Mortar rounds. But you couldn't tell by the writing...

A howitzer is a wheeled artillery piece. They come in several calibers. 105 MM is an old stand by. They are used as anti personal pieces

I would take it very personally indeed were I to be shot with one.

Gunfire erupts...One of my least favorite headlines.
You see, these firearms erupt spontaneously, as if they are a natural force like a volcano.
Unpredictable, uncontrollable - we're at their mercy and there's no moral judgment implied.
Usually this phrase appears when the gunfire occurs either in "urban" areas or involving the denizens thereof. And that goes for illegal aliens as well.

maybe shells for mortars/arty was what was meant.
Is the Army missing live ammo, or were they duds
collected on the impact area, or training rounds
purchased from the local surplus store?

A “Gun” is a direct fire weapon and a howitzer is indirect fire as I recall.

A Gun is a direct fire weapon and a howitzer is indirect fire as I recall.Basically you're correct. Howitzers are high trajectory artillery pieces. Their original purpose was the shelling of opposite slopes of hills. Modern technology has brought about field artillery that will perform the function of both high and low trajectory field guns.

Think the folks in Yakima would vote for a WA style SB1070? Depends on if only citizens got to vote. Ever been to Yakima?

Born there!
Last visit was late 2008 after burying my Father.
It’s a shame what has happened to that area!
