Bedbugs block Social Security checks

DETROIT, - Residents of a Detroit high-rise apartment building said bedbug-related stoppage of mail delivery has interfered with their monthly income.

Tenants in the Detroit Housing Commission's 143-unit Warren West Apartments said the mail stoppage, which the U.S. Postal Service said began last week when a mail carrier encountered exterminators spraying for bedbugs, is endangering their livelihoods by preventing them from receiving their Social Security checks in the mail, the Detroit News reported Thursday.

"We have a bedbug problem, but it's not so bad; the exterminator comes in and takes care of it," said Robbie Wingate, 59, who suffered a stroke two years ago. "But now they're refusing to deliver the mail. How dare they? I need my check to pay the rent, and so do a lot of other people in this building. There's people in wheelchairs; people with no legs. How are they going to eat? This is bad."

Ed Moore, spokesman for U.S. Postal Service Detroit District, said officials are working on a plan to deliver mail outside of the building.

"When the carrier delivered there last week, the exterminators asked her why she was in the building, and said she couldn't be there because of the bedbugs," Moore said. "At that time, the mail was temporarily suspended. We won't put our carriers in harm's way."

But bedbugs will.

Geez! Bedbugs?? Not around here! Ever since I inherited those 55 gallon drums of DDT from my Grandfather’s estate, we haven’t had an ant, flea, fly or any other kind of bug problem. The neighbors swear there are mosquitoes around here someplace, but we haven’t seen one in years....maybe the word is out...

I’d send these folks a little sample, but the Post Office gets so unpleasant about shipping white powder anywhere...

Rachel Carlson was instrumental in having DDT banned ... since then, hundred of thousands of pregnant women and children have died from malaria ...Malaria remains a major public health challenge in many countries. 2008 WHO estimates were 243 million cases, and 863,000 deaths. About 89% of these deaths occur in Africa, and mostly to children under the age of 5.

Maybe they could just go to the PO to get their mail for the few days it takes to spray or whatever. Should I ask what the residents are doing there since it was unsafe for postal workers?

I think it was Rachel Carson, not Rachel Carlson, but I agree with you, she was evil.

So, if we live in the country, we don’t get bedbugs?

Have your SS check deposited automatically each month in your checking account. Use checks (they do exist) to pay your rent and buy your groceries.

Now, was that difficult to conceive of and act upon?

It’s not impossible, but things like that reach epidemic levels much faster in dense urban areas.
