However, Melinda's father, Harry, strongly objects to the union, as does their hired hand, Roy Tayloe. Tom loses all his money to Tayloe in a poker game and when Tayloe is found murdered and robbed Matt suspects Porter of the crime. But he has a good alibi, having a witness that saw him sell his horses to a man who lives 75 miles away. Yet, Harry Miles believes Tom guilty. Tom and Melinda want Matt to try Tom, wherein he will be found innocent, and shame Melinda's father into stopping his harassment of Tom.
