Another bit about EOTechs and AimPoints -- in very bright sunlight, the red dot/reticle will be completely washed out. I was surprised to note this. The ACOG, with its ability to adjust contrast on the fly, doesn't have this problem, and it's a biggie, in my book.
Hey, you didn't have any probs with failures to feed on that test rifle #2, didja? Just askin'...
Sometimes they make the old homestead uninhabitable before I venture out. The trick is to take a long shovel, and hurl them as far into the neighbor’s yard as possible.
In seriousness, the way to deal with skunks is to lure them into box traps that don’t allow any light in. Then the hard part is letting them out.
Another thing, my back yard is very large.
For a fast combat sight from point blank firefights to 700 yard “designated marksman” shots, yes. If there are better, I haven’t seen them. I’m sure there are some, but not that I’ve handled/shot.
My only malf during 1200 rounds was self-inflicted, “checking” the chamber with the loaded mag still up hard. Can’t blame the rifle for that. Some rifles, as we have seen, didn’t like steel ammo. My bushmaster loves Wolf.
I too have experience both as a spotter and with the Camanche Board ... can I tag a long (I’ll bring the Beer)

Joe,
I remember you telling me this when we were at Cecil Webb.
I'm wondering if something isn't up with your particular AP, as I've never had that problem nor heard of anyone having that problem with Aimpoints - even in the harshest sunny environments. The US military used the Comp M2 for years in the Mideast.
I've used my personal Aimpoint (Comp M3, 4 MOA) on the most extreme sunny days in Florida and never had to go anywhere near the highest setting.
I shot a Comp C3, 2 MOA (not mine) extensively in the mideast this summer, which I set only 3 clicks up from the off position at mid-day during the summer months. No problem ever seeing the dot.
You might want to have your glass checked out if you're losing the dot on bright days. It's most certainly not supposed to do that... ever.
Maybe not the CQ/T come to think of it.
1. FREEPER (probably an conservative activist to start with -- and probably writes lots of letters to politicians and to the local paper against gun control so....)
2. Former military -- especially combat arms types (trained trigger puller) and a bonus if you're an NCO or commissioned officer like myself.
3. NRA member -- another bounty bonus if you're a life member and a double if you're also an NRA Instructor like myself (21+ years)
4. Holds a CCW Permit 'nother bonus and has had one in multiple states or valid in multiple states (via reciprocity) which would be me again.
5. Magazine subscriptions. Gun mags? (I subscribe to at least 3) Soldier of Fortune? Hunting? Field and Stream? Outdoorsman. Watch out...shades of Randy Weaver or that guy who ran the FBI ragged in NC after blowing up the abortion clinics, Eric Rudolph?
Well, you get the idea. TRUST me, I no longer worry that what I say here is going to put me on a "list." I'm already at the top of most of those lists which will also be cross referenced and flagged just as I've laid these out... and I'll bet they have a few more categorized lists I've not even considered. How many of YOU can count a few more?
Night vision? I wish. In a pinch IR would work and you can get IR Chem Lights to mark areas off that only you or somebody with an IR viewer could see. IR has the shortcoming in that it is easily detectable as having a beam that can be drawn back to the sender so it would "paint" your location.
Even better would be THERMAL. There is a nifty little gadget I have seen advertised in several catalogs called a thermal game finder that is effective up to 300 meters on a cool evening for detecting large game (deer or man sized) in a woods environment, but may not work very well where there are a lot of targets in an urban area. Or where there will be buildings giving off heat to confuse things.
I'd also like a laser range finder. Those can be had for as little as $180 or so. Real high speed ones are found at up to $500 or more.
I agree with using night vision game finding cameras. Especially those that can be rigged up to a laptop for real time images. It might be possible to rig those up so that a remote detonator could...naaaaw I'm getting ahead of myself here!
$800? that's either used or one of the lesser models. I have seen them as high as $1200. But maybe that's a local price at a gun show in Miami. You know, whatever the market will bear. Still, IF I had the cash, I'd plop down as much as $1500 for a really good ACOG, probably. As you said, even a 4X can be used as an excellent CQB sight. And still be good out further. The light gatering diode strip that runs along the body of the scope enhances the daytime reticle even brighter for faster acquisition and the tritium is great for nighttime. I'm just wondering which reticle: The amber triangle, a RED CHEVRON or a GREEN CHEVRON. I'm thinking red anything because that's night vision neutral.
Because it's not just the Comp-M -- the Eotech 551 exhibits the same effect.
Something I have noticed from images coming back from both Iraq and Asscrackistan -- the troops in the cities and suburban environs often have the red dots -- the guys out in the open field are all ACOGs. Check it sometime. I always figurd that this was due to the issues I describe.
I never had trouble seeing my EOTech dot/circle either, not even in the brightest noonday sun. And not even cranked all the way up.
I’m sure there are better scopes for 100-1000 yards. Not so sure if there is a better for 1 to 800 yards. Love to try them all. Have some RDT&E models you want to ship me?????
;^)
He’s talking of fade out from bright sunlight into a dark room etc...
My comp does such. ACOG does not...mine is a TA31 with the docter halo on top of it...
Mine was a factory buy at around 1200$...
My comp m is on a short M4gery with an ANPVS14 which is where that model aimpoint works best.
If I have to go with one version for glass on my PDW its the ACOG.
One other consideration is a fixed 8x scope with a docter mounted at the 2 o’clock position for quick snap shooting and the 200 meter right eye left eye stop shot....
I was less impressed with the green circle. I don’t see how the red or orange triangle can be improved! For high speed up close you use all of it like a big red dot. For precision, the top of the triangle is as exact as a scalpel.
The offset optic GREAT configuration depending on how you do it. I was thinking of doing something similar with a piston 5.56 I'm putting together.
If I do decide to go with that type of configuration, the side-mounted glass would likely be the Aimpoint T-1 micro with the Daniel Defense offset mount.
The Micro T-1 only weighs 4 freaking ounces. Would be a nice rifle with a Nightforce up top.
The only problem with this configuration would be running night vision (PVS-14) behind the offset T-1.
Hence, I might just put the T-1 on top, with a quick-release 4x magnifier behind it so I can take the magnifier off and replace it with the PVS-14.
Good looking optic......you have one now ?? Opinion / Review ?
Hope yer well buddy......
