"I felt sorry for them," she said. "We took care of family and we took care of friends. We took care of people we didn't even know. The more you did for people, the more they wanted." Health and Human Services can't seem to learn that lesson, either, :)

Any advice for big money winners? Limit the number of people who know you've won.
Folks always want to glom off the winnings or hard work of others.
Amazingly, a couple of weeks after my Daddy died, my mother received a letter from a perfect stranger, saying that since my mother would probably get money from his insurance, she should send some to this perfect stranger, who had fallen on 'hard times'.
I have no idea how this woman got my mother's address, and I was absolutely amazed by the gall of her to write and ask for money from someone she doesn't know, with the attitude that somehow she deserved to get it.

The lottery winners who invest their money in municipal bonds and live comfortably off the interest never get in the newspaper.

Morons. Even after paying taxes they could have lived a nice quiet normal person lifestyle off the interest alone. Better than most people actually.
No sympathy.

This sort of thing is quite common. People who have never learned to manage somehow acquire a significant amount. Because they have never learned to manage money, they run through it all very quickly and end up broke.
There may be a lesson to this about the current administration. None of them created the wealth that they have. It was all given to them, mostly by the government or wealthy “friends” who wanted favors from the government.
We are getting the expected results.

Someone once said that if you take all the money in the world, divide it evenly among the people, those that were rich before will be rich again and those that were poor will be poor again.

It’s a conundrum.
Smart people with any sense won’t play the lottery. But if they did, they would know how to live if they ever won big.
Stupid people with no sense are the ones to play the lottery. And if/when they do win....
They piss it away like drunken democrats.

From the beginning, she said, she knew they were handling their good luck badly. They decided to get payments over 20 years and the yearly payment came to $666,666.66. The payout option of the beast!
