SPEAKING OF SPORTS: Welcome to Yankee Hating Season
The Morning Journal ^ | Oct. 9, 2010 | Jim Ingraham

Posted on 10/09/2010 1:33:32 PM PDT by La Enchiladita

The New York Yankees this year had a payroll of $206 million. The San Diego Padres had a payroll of $37 million — and neither team won its division.

So who had the better year?

I think it was Paul McCartney who once said, “I don’t care too much for money ‘cause money can’t buy you a World Series championship, although it can pretty consistently get you into the playoffs.”

He’s right.

Lance Berkman is making $14.5 million this year. That’s more than the combined salaries of the Indians’ entire starting lineup in their last game of the season — and Berkman Thursday night was the No.8 hitter in the Yankees’ lineup. Not their cleanup hitter. Number eight.

Kerry Wood, a mere setup guy in the Yankees’ bullpen, is making $10.5 million.

Bleacher seats are $ 14 at Yankee Stadium. Yes many locals come to Yankee games, as well as families from the suburbs, and rich Manhattan celebrities.

It is quite a mixed crowd. LOL

Methinks the Yankees are appraised at being worth 2 billion dollars. They’ve won 27 championships. So unless the teams you cited can claim both, the Yankees ARE the gold standard of sport.

Normally am all for capitalism but I hate the Yankees too. So it was kinda sweet when the low payroll Marlins, including future Red Sox Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell, beat em in 03
WS. (Clemens was tanned rested and ready for a game 7
that never came). Call it, efficient use of capital

For Red Sox fans, the Yankees seem like the MA Democrat
party: feeling of entitlement, always winning (well ALMOST always). When Red Sox Nation was spoken of, the pinstripes responded with Yankees Universe.

Right now am watching a playoff game—if Rangers win tonight
and Yankees follow suit you’ll have a team formerly owned
by George W. Bush playing against a team Sox fans regard as
“the Evil Empire” (and for those in Chicago, yes I know
there’s also the WHITE Sox but I’m so used to just using
“Sox” to refer to Red Sox...)

Read it in a sports column last year or the year before, and I’ve heard it mentioned on sports talk shows here in New York.

Since a person north of the Mason Dixon line is a Yankee. Then would a Philadelphia fan be autophobia ?

New York Yankees were originally the Baltimore Orioles until 1903. The team relocated to NYC from Baltimore, and were known as the Greater New York Americans. They were also known as the Greater New York Highlanders, then New York Highlanders, then New York Yankees.

Yankees are the most successful sports franchise in sporting history.

AL Pennants 40
Eastern Division Pennants 16
Wild card berths 4

Total World Series 40
Total won 27
Total lost 13
Winning pct .675

1998 Yankees own the MLB single season winning record of 125-50 (including sweeping the Rangers and Padres)

Let the baseless hating commence.

And who was the greatest Yankee of them all? Well, he hit the first home run in Yankee Stadium. He hit the first All-Star game home run. He was the first to hit one clear out of Comisky’s double decker stands in right. At the age of forty he was the first to clear the double decker stands at Forbes Field (a 500 footer). He also hit more home runs in one season than any other team in the American League. And by the bye, he holds the AL record for shutouts by a lefty in a season (shared with Ron Guidry). And he also stole home more times than Lou Brock. Why it sounds like the Bazoo of Bang himself, George Herman “Babe” Ruth.

Watched the Rays Rangers game and the playcall from the plate umpire was bad. The calls have been bad for the entire contest. I also remember the horrible calls in the Angels A’s game last year.

Didn’t notice the Yankees playing any of those games.

Love the Yankees! I think it would be great to have them meet the Braves in the World Series.

Babe Ruth’ performance enhancing drugs of choice were steaks, eggs, bacon, bread, potatoes, alcohol, and enormous quantities of “Tang”
