Thanks. I don’t think any of that is growing in our area, but will keep an eye out and see if I see any.
Things are wrapping up around here, except for a chipmunk invasion - my traps are going off twice a day. The semi-feral cat that was taking care of pests was murdered by the local coyote pack and that was sad. We had an excellent green bean harvest, along with spuds and root veggies - lots of green tomatoes due to the cold spring.
Breaking News RD. I just heard a Mom of a 232 Red Devil call RUSH and asked him to do a shout out to the 232rd in Afghanistan...
I pinged him on the Rush thread, as well...
bump for later
Thanks so much for the info-I was afraid of that. Chains and the truck are in my future. My bushes are about twice as high as the ones in the pic...heavy sigh....what in the world was I thinking when I planted them oh so many years ago....it seemed like a good idea at the time.
Thanks, Mom! :)
The rocks just keep me from mowing over the beds. I can get a little wild on the mower. I mowed over a blueberry bush this year, and my StepDad took out one of my small viburnums, but comparatively, it was a pretty GOOD mowing year, LOL!
It seems to work! :)
Still getting a few beans, cukes, tomatoes, and waiting on cantaloupes to ripen. Carrots and onions we are pulling as needed. Hubby's white winter wheat is up about 3 inches and he has been busy hulling butternuts.
I planted bed #1 with some carrots, lettuce, onions, and garlic. When the weather gets cold, I'll cover them. I planted bed #3 in Red winter wheat. Bed #4 will be the same this weekend. Bed #2 is the one that is still producing.
We are enjoying the benefits of an extended season so far this year. Our average date for 1st frost is October 15, we got close to this, but so far have not actually reached it yet. We are supposed to get rain this weekend, which we really need.
I have some persimmons to work up, but am not sure what the best thing to do is. I am thinking about just washing them, letting them set a few days, and then freezing them whole or dehydrating them. Then I can use them for persimmon bread this winter.
If anyone has some experiences that might help me, I would appreciate greatly hearing from you. Thanks.
Have a great weekend everyone. God Bless.
Any ideas for removing kernels from popcorn cobs? The ‘twist’ method is starting to chew flesh...and I have a LOT of popcorn...it may be a year’s supply.
“I respectfully request that we ban all pictures of Michelle Antoinette from these gardening posts! We may as well post Anna Nicole Smith photos for what EITHER of them know about, or have contributed to, the world of gardening! :)”
Either that or else post the standard WOOKIE warning first LOL.
Same here in Missouri. We need to burn some trash, but it’s too dry, and all the plants are thirsty.
I actually hope TS Richard brings us some rain. We had a few light showers earlier, but just enough to mess up a clean car.

Amazing isn’t it. Just getting the car clean can be better than a rain dance.LOL.
First real frost in Southeast Wisconsin last night. The pasture was all white this mornig, although as soon as the sun came out the grass turned green again. I think I could safely say that I have mowed for the last time this year.
I can’t believe all the garden chores that DIDN’T GET DONE this year. I still have weeds in my flower gardens and one the beds I tried to kill this year has all the weeds back again, worse than before. I’d appreciate any advice you all can give me about getting rid of pernicious weeds. I don’t think there is much to do now with winter coming soon — or is there?
My vegetable garden is half torn out, but I still have some plants to remove. My dog is still finding tomatoes to eat. I’m compiling a list of what NOT to plant next year.
Is it too late to plant some kind of cover crop in the bed where I tried to grow corn this year? Or, should I just till it and add lots of fertilizer in the spring? Should I cover it with a tarp to keep weeds out?
Not sure about your state, but red clover can be planted here in the winter time, then turned under for green manure and the garden ready for planting by June 1.
Annual rye grass could also probably still be planted here, and turned under in the spring.
I think that hoosiermama is the expert on lasagna gardening.
Thanks for the Breaking News! Yes VMFA 232 Red Devils are in Kandahar, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. They are flying F/A 18c Hornets now days.
In 1972 This F-4J Phantom - VMFA 232 Red Devils was downed on the border of Laos and Vietnam in Houa Phan Province near the city of Sop Hoa, the only Marine jet ever to be lost to enemy aircraft during the Vietnam War.
This was one of the F-4J's I worked on every night. The crew ejected but the pilot was captured (and later was declared KIA) the RIO was rescued. A very sad day for our squadron.
We were stationed in Nam Phong, Thialand (The Rose Garden) at the time. A picture I took of our flight line and the hastily thrown together base. When I took this we were still living in tents. We eventually moved into tents with frames like on the TV show M*A*S*H
My living quarters. It was hot! I worked night crew 6pm-6am
My Father and his STOL Air America aircraft delivering beer to us in Nam Phong. There is one more case of Lowenbrau to retrieve from the plane.
