Good morning gardeners. I am convinced that to be a successful gardener I will have to be a little more stylish. No more four or five year old jeans and pocket T-shirts or sweatshirts. Oh, and no more beat up old scruffy tennis shoes or crumpled up baseball caps for me. This winter while perusing the seed catalogues I will also be flipping through a few fashion magazines for my new look!
I may even get myself a Segway to get me up to the garden in style.
Maybe a flute of champagne in the morning before heading out to pick peppers?
Hey why not? Dressing up in style seems to be the secrete that produces abundant crops at the White House garden.

I think that the secret to an abundant garden, Mo style, is to have some do it for you.
I’m going to try lasagna gardening over the winter. I have everything but the newspapers. I hope to get it all done this weekend so that everything can decompose over the winter. My soil is mostly clay and to purchase all the peat and topsoil would be very expensive. Lasagna gardening seems easy because I can get everything for free and I don’t have to use chemical fertilizers. I’m not a greenie-weenie, but I sure do like free! Any FReepers have success with this method?
My garden is doing great, but we really need some rain. We may get some later this afternoon, but probably not enough for any runoff. My lawn is in dire need of moisture as well. I just hope we are not headed in for another dry winter this year.
That is the secret - dress up in style and let someone else do the dirty work!

I have not had nearly the time as previous years to spend in the garden but still enough to harvest some things.
So far only three light frosts this fall so I still have some veggies yielding at this time.
I have dug half of my sweet potatoes, and plan to do the rest today. I planted some fall radishes, spinach, turnips, a few snow peas, onions and a good number of my tomatoes plants survived the light frost. I noticed yesterday I also might have another picking of green beans.
The weather forecasters say things are about to change by the end of this upcoming week. And rain is said to be moving my direction sometime later today. If the forecasters are correct sounds like this will be my last week for harvesting and time to begin to put the garden space to clean up and rest during the winter months.
I respectfully request that we ban all pictures of ‘Michelle Antoinette’ from these gardening posts! We may as well post Anna Nicole Smith photos for what EITHER of them know about, or have contributed to, the world of gardening! :)
My gardening attire is very old sweatpants cut off at the knees, a stained old shirt that belonged to my husband (I stole it), Ked slip on sneakers without laces, and a bandana for my hair. I am frightful! Please tell me you are not advising me to wear pumps!!! Just a thought.
Yeah, we need some rain here also. We got a few sprinkles two nights ago but have had nothing to speak of since Aug.

You know that little rock garden I post quite often? The one where I swap out crops all season long and is uber-productive? That started as a Lasagna Garden, and I've expanded it over the years. I love the process and the soil is like BUTTAH!

Noticed your plans to dig your sweet potatoes. How do you preserve them? Can, freeze, dry storage? This is my first year to get a few sweet taters and I need to dig mine also. Have been delaying the job because I’m not sure how to store/preserve them. Any ideas would be welcome!!!
Sometime in the near future I will be planting my garlic. Someone sent me about 20 different cloves from all over the world, so I am looking forward to that. Been busy with the art exhibition so haven’t had a lot of time to get around to the back yard.

The Fall weather here has been simply amazing! I still have Nasturtium blooming away, and marigolds and a few other things that should be spent by now. Today's the end of the line, though. Rain all weekend, then temps dipping. I have been covering things (above) when we have nights in the 30's, but so far, no problems with any of the cool-weather crops; lettuces and spinach are doing great, brussels sprouts and leeks and onions are doing great...I can't KILL the swiss chard, LOL!
Dig them, let them lay out in a shady spot (with no rain) for a day or so to ‘cure’, to harden up a little after you bring them out of the ground, and store them in a dry, dark place with good air circulation. Do not stack them, and check often for rot. One bad potato will spoil the whole lot.
IIRC the historical Marie Antoinette had a fake farm where she played at being at-one-with-the-soil as well.
The parallels are eerie.
Lasagne gardening is great on clay....Topped mine off with three year old saw dust that had cow/horse manure in it. Very successful. Now most of my gardener friends have at least one bed using this method. Even on larger areas of garden still compost in place and use “no till” method.
Don’t forget to use shredding materials..Ashes from fire place etc.
Cardboard can be used instead of newspapers for bottom layer of just ask local breakfast restaurants to save their papers for you.
