Were the perps black and the victim white?

They beat her into a persistent vegetative state from which she never recovered. Had she awoken for even a week, a month, something, the case could be made that their actions didn't ultimately lead to her death.

But they did.

Glad they will stay where they should; behind bars.

God bless this woman's family.

Given that she never recovered it makes sense. It’s pretty typical that if the victim dies a couple of days or weeks later they move from assault to murder in the charges, other than the time involved there’s no real difference here.

Deputy district attorney Dan Fitzsimmons described in graphic detail what happened to Ms. Mitchell. "She was knocked to the ground. She was kicked in her head. She was kicked in her neck. Her head was stomped," he said. "To add insult to injury," he said, she was stabbed with a piece of metal with a sharp edge that punctured her intestines.

Hmmmm. Not sure what 3rd degree murder might be. I don’t understand how such a severe beatings can’t reasonably be understood by the perpetrator(s) to be likely to cause death. This was no accident.
