I won’t comment on the wisdom of buying a new car. You’ll have to work that one out yourself. However, I drive a 2 year old Lexus GX 460, which I believe is the Lexus version of the Highlander. It is a terrific car — an absolute pleasure to drive (and this from a guy whose last car was a Porsche 911 Carrera, but that’s a long story). Mine has been completely trouble-free, which is not unusual for any Toyota/Lexus vehicle. You can’t go wrong with this car.
We have a 1997 4Runner and a 2004 Sequoia. We may not ever need to buy another car. Toyotas are made so well, inside and out. We just never have any trouble with them.
