WASHINGTON, Nov 3 (Reuters) - U.S. House of Representatives Republican leader John Boehner put lower government spending at the top of Congress' agenda next year, a day after his party took control of the House.
"It's pretty clear the American people want us to do something about cutting spending here in Washington and helping to create an environment where we'll get jobs back," Boehner told reporters on Wednesday.
Republicans picked up at least 60 seats in Tuesday's elections to hold a solid majority in next year's House. Boehner is expected to get the top job of House speaker, supplanting Democrat Nancy Pelosi.
With last year's U.S. budget deficit at a whopping $1.29 trillion, equal to 8.9 percent of gross domestic product, voters have been clamoring for smaller, less expensive government.
Some economists fear that politicians could pare spending too much and wind up stifling economic growth, while others have called for more stimulus spending to boost tepid economic growth that has failed to significantly reduce an unemployment rate stuck near 10 percent.
Embracing the small government theme, House Republicans have promised to rein in government. In September, they said their first step would be to cut Washington's spending back to 2008 levels, achieving $100 billion in savings immediately -- a move that would do little to sop up the red ink on the ledger.

Can I add Dept of Education to that list?
I also wanted to say that Boehner makes me proud to be a buckeye. The man is awesome and represents everything that is American conservatism IMO. I sincerely hope he doesn’t go the way of Newt.
Exactly the right start. The TEA Party (Taxed Enough Already) made it perfectly clear what they want. Boehner needs to make a minimum standard of spending cuts a prerequisite for GOP votes on any proposal, and for any bill that comes to the floor or comes out of the conference committee, and that standard should be serious and not just symbolic. We can address other issues later, perhaps only after 2012, but the budget is an emergency.
My personal starting point would be with the EPA. Obama plans to use them to press forward with his agenda and the house can weaken them considerably.
I say immediately cut NPR and PBS just to get off to a good start in letting the “progressives” know that there is a new sheriff in town.
most definitely. talk about bad investments.
Getting rid of RATcare should save a few trillion here and there.
Juan Williams agrees with you- me too.
I second this. I want funding cut to NPR so that my liberal friends will stop telling me to listen to that travesty. Honetly, if it gets them to shut the hell up, the tax benefits are secondary. ;-)
EPA, Dept of Education, IRS.
DoJ, actually, could use a little less money. I think the DoJ suing one of the states of the union over constitutionally protected actions should result in a financial consequence.
They can start with Obama’s travel budget!!!!
All of them mentioned so far are important, but I, too have concerns about Obama’s planned use of the EPA to put in his cap and trade policy.
Also, HOW do we put a roadblock in place to mitigate the harm the Federal Reserve is doing by MONETIZING THE DEBT???
As I understand it, their 100 year contract on America expires sometime soon...what about that???
restrict public education to American citizens ONLY unless said visitor or illegal alien pays tuition for their children
restrict any and all aid from HHS to American citizens ONLY
sanctuary states and cities get zip for aid
I agree, the EPA would be a good place to start. Also, de-fund anything that has to do with that healthcare debacle.
Ditto on all of the above.
I am really glad to hear this. SPENDING cuts. Not dancing around the issue by talking about “getting rid of waste and fraud” as if that alone is enough. This issue needs to be addressed head on—Middle Class America needs to give up some government benes. I’m willing to do so as long as I’m convinced cuts are real and across the board.
Millennium Challenge Corporation
The MCC was created to provide international assistance to some of the poorest countries in the world. Since 2004, MCC has been creating partnerships with impoverished countries, but only with those countries committed to good governance, economic freedom, and investments in their citizens. The Millennium Challenge Corporations gives these countries large-scale grants for creating solutions to eradicate poverty. They also give smaller grants to countries that dont quote meet these criteria but are firmly committed to improving their policy performance.
U.S. Board on Geographic Names
This obscure naming agency is responsible for deciding upon the names of the geographic highlights of our beautiful land. The federal agency was created in 1890 to maintain uniform geographic name usage throughout the Federal Government.
The Appalachian Regional Commission
The ARC approves funding for more than 400 projects annually throughout the 13-state Appalachian Region. If you take a look at their website - there must have been a few hundred million dollars of make work projects that smell like those in the last stimulus bill.
It only took me minutes to find these - imagine if a few forensic accountants were given this task and were paid 1% of the total saved?
hell yeah
