Cash sought for Cam Newton

During the height of star quarterback Cam Newton's recruitment out of junior college last year, a man who said he represented Newton allegedly was soliciting a six-figure payment to secure his signature on a national letter of intent, ESPN.com has learned.

Former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond told ESPN.com a teammate of Bond's at Mississippi State in the early 1980s contacted him soon after Newton's official visit to Mississippi State during the Ole Miss game in December, and said he was representing Newton.

"He said it would take some cash to get Cam," Bond said. "I called our athletic director, Greg Byrne, and he took it from there. That was pretty much it."

I think this story will end up being more about Bond and less about Cam Newton.

Here’s a current story as well

I think that ESPN/NYT etc have some Alabama/Oregon fans on staff who are working hard to keep this story alive and impugn Cam Newton and AU during a title and Heisman pursuit. ;-)

With all due respect... there may be some Oregon fans there but there has not been an Alabama fan at ESPN since..... hmm, I guess there never has been one.

Excellent point actually. No self-respect ‘Bama fan or alumnus *would* be there!

Roll Tide/War Eagle!

Gonna be a great game.

Neither of those teams can get within two TDs of Oregon.

1. Oregon DOES have a good team.
2. We need to actually PLAY the game to see who wins by two TDs ;-)
3. I hope to gawd neither AU nor Oregon is forced (by the BCS) to play Boise State, because by the second quarter it’d be a boring game. Oregon or AU (or Bama) would crush them.

The pass defenses of AU and ‘Bama cannot handle the passing offense of Oregon; nor the pace of the Oregon offense.

Oregon has started making some pretty good inroads in recruiting top quality Texas high school talent. Oregon has the best facilities for football in the country. With the U. of Texas having an off year, don’t be surprised if some of those Texas H.S. players start choosing Oregon over the Texas schools.

60 second tour of the UO locker room.
