My aunt’s cousin was the first person prosecuted, and then jailed, for killing a wolf on his ranch outside of Red Lodge, MT, after the re-introduction of wolves to Montana. They were killing his sheep, and he ended up in federal prison for protecting his livelihood.
It makes zero sense to me to disallow people to kill large predators that are preying on their livestock. I say this as someone who loves nature and animals, and an avid nature photographer.
I think his case was where the term “Shoot, Shovel, Shut-up” came from
