Post-Race Fisticuffs Follow BC Marathon

A post-race fight between jockey Calvin Borel and rider Javier Castellano upstaged the $454,500 Breeders’ Cup Marathon (gr. III) (VIDEO), the first race on the Nov. 5 Breeders’ Cup World Championship card at Churchill Downs.

The scuffle began as Borel and Castellano were weighing out following the 1 3/4-mile race that included some serious bumping at the five-sixteenths pole as the field rounded the second turn for the second time.

Replays showed that Castellano, aboard Prince Will I Am, bore out, impeding Romp, who was ridden by Martin Garcia. Garcia’s horse stumbled badly and the rider was clearly out of the saddle, but miraculously recovered and kept Romp on his feet. The incident between Castellano and Garcia also caused Borel, who was on A. U. Miner, to nearly become unseated and had to steady his mount.

Prince William I Am had finished second to winner Eldaafer and A. U. Miner was fourth behind third-place finisher Gabriel's Hill.

Borel was livid, and was restrained after tangling with Castellano as an ESPN audience and the crowd at Churchill Downs looked on. Numerous attempts to restrain Borel were unsuccessful for several minutes until his wife Lisa and someone else escorted him through the tunnel leading to the track.

"Borel was livid..."

I'll say. Normally they wait until they get to the jocks' room to go at it.

It sounds like the promoters of the Breeders Cup have found something to enlarge their audience and take their event to the next level, jockey mud wrestling! If it hadn't been for this jockey shoving match I'm pretty sure my radar would never have picked up on the horse races.

It’s still fun to watch. Will give ESPN something to talk about other than Randy Moss or Brett Favre 24/7.

Ever been in a bar fight? It’s always the short, scrawny guys you need to look out for . . . .

They are more than strong.
They have guts like you would not believe.

They ride 2 and 3 year old horses that are bred to run, not necessarily for their ease of handling.

They ride at a speed that would scare the hell out of the best of the riders in other disciplines.

Their courage is exceeded by no one.

And in races like this one, the winner gets a nice check.

So all of the ingredients for an explosion are there.
