There must be a number of conservative books you enjoy. A little research in the publishing industry will tell you who the authors’ agents are.
Also, if you’re seriously interested in getting published by a traditional ink publishing house, you should be doing extensive marketing research by reading PW, joining writers’ clubs that are for authors of the sort of book you’ve written, reading everything you hear about there, reading the competition, and networking in clubs and organizations about your field of interest. Go to conferences. Ask questions. Make sure your ms. corresponds to present market realities.
And finally, you have to develop and present a marketing plan in addition to the classical book proposal. Before anybody is going to publish your book, you have to show what you can bring to the sales effort. They aren’t going to do it for you. Can you speak in public convincingly? Do you have the credentials (advanced degree, military or political or business experience, specialized expertise) that will make readers believe what you’ve written? Do you have good interview skills? Are you gorgeous and well-dressed, at ease on TV? Do you know influential people who will write a blurb for you? Put your qualifications in your marketing plan.
Unfortunately, I live in an extremely blue area (think San Fran metro) and don’t have a lot of opportunity to “out” my conservatism.
Yes, taught public speaking. Gorgeous I don’t know (not as pretty as Sarah Palin, that’s for sure. Probably not as pretty as Sean Hannity either though in better shape than Rush!) Credentials yes. Can get blurbs from Mark Steyn and Jonah Goldberg (who I’m pinging tomorrow). Lot’s of time in on communications and marketing. Just trying to narrow down the agent search a little.
