Arm hopes to bring high-performance graphics applications such as 3D imaging and gaming to handheld devices like smartphones while keeping battery life intact with a new graphics processor design it announced on Wednesday.

Everyday multimedia applications like video playback and image recognition draw a lot of battery life, but the company's new Mali T604 graphics processor will accelerate those applications while drawing less power, said Ian Smythe, director of marketing at ARM. The Mali T604 will be able to handle 3D imaging and full high-definition video.

****************************EXCERPT*******************************

The graphics processor is designed to work with the company's latest Cortex-A15 CPU, which was announced in September. The A15, which is designed for devices ranging from smartphones to servers, could scale up in performance with up to 16 cores, with each CPU running at 2.5GHz.

Nvidia already has 3D smart phone processors out, though so far we have only seen pre production phones at electronics shows using them.

I have been reading of 3D screen being in development for the smart phone market now as well.

Combine the two with a 4.3 to 5 inch screen size like the HTC Evo or the Dell Streak and you would have a really awesome pocket gaming platform.

I have read about Nvidia showing up in tablets,...but haven't seen any products as yet...nor in smartphones.

Apple currently totally owns the tablet market.

ARM intros Mali-T604 GPU for embedded apps, Samsung quickly adopts it

***********************************EXCERPT*************************************

Written by Cristian Wednesday 10 November 2010 - 19:00 | Tags: arm, gpu, mali-t604

Today at its Technology Conference in Santa Clara, ARM has revealed its fourth-generation Mali GPU, an embedded graphics solution which promises to offer 'visually rich user experiences not previously seen in consumer electronics devices.'

Known as Mali-T604, the new GPU makes use of a tri-pipe architecture, and has between one and four cores, a Memory Management Unit (MMU) to support virtual memory, a configurable L2 cache (ARM recommends 32kB per core), and support for OpenCL 1.1, OpenGL ES 2.0/1.1, OpenVG 1.1 and DirectX.

According to ARM, the new graphics IP is capable of delivering up to a 5x performance improvement over current Mali graphics processors. This claim has already convinced Samsung, who'll be the first to get access to Mali-T604. We're eagerly awaiting chips packing the new GPU. And tablets powered by those chips. And smartphones powered by those chips.

Oh great. As if kids (and by kids I mean anyone under 35) aren't already addicted enough to their iBling.

I work with kids who are literally living paycheck-to-paycheck and in debt up to their eyeballs, yet they ALL have the latest iPhone or Droid with unlimited text and internet, thinking nothing of the $100+/mo they are spending for this toy.

No, just the hype part.

The little Pandigital tablets sold for bookreading , and tablets by a number of others in the 250 dollar range and the 130 dollar range are probably selling as many or more more units than Apple, and for higher end units well I post a lot from a 5 inch Dell Streak that is also my phone and the forthcoming Samsung tab looks like a fery nice device.

I have a 5 year old Gigabyte M704 tablet running XP with a 7" resistive screen - but at about an inch thick it seems positively chunky by today's standards. It will run Diablo II and my new machine won't :(
