The big purge in 2008 was Rudy Giuliani supporters. Some had a habit of miss-stating Ronald Reagan positions in order to make Giuiliani look more conservative, and it rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.
Not being a part of any active campaign, I usually completely miss that there are actually people who sign up at sites like this as part of a political campaign strategy. I think it would be cool if that didn’t happen for any candidate, but I don’t remember it being distracting or anything.
I think the important thing is to not end up like 2008, where conservatives spent so much time attacking each other’s candidates that we never were able to settle on one that could win, so we ended up with John McCain.
To be honest - I would vote for Madoff/Vandersloot in 2012 over Obama at this point.
Just out of curiosity, do you think any of the candidates in the 2008 GOP primaries could have won? I don't. I remember when this site was Fred Republic and he couldn't get out of the starting blocks. I doubt Rudy/Huck McRomney would have had much chance against The American Idol either.
You are completely wrong if you think that the people who were banned were new comers who only joined FreeRepublic to influence the campaign. They were almost all long term conservatives, if not long term social conservatives.
‘The big purge in 2008 was Rudy Giuliani supporters.’
Actually it was spring of 2007, by early 2008 the primaries were over,
