Harry Potter’s Boobgate: Role Restricted Emma Watson
Fashion Time Magazine ^ | 23 November 2010 | Fashion Time Magazine

It’s not global tub-thumping on the scale of North Korea’s shelling of South Korea, but Harry Potter’s Emma Watson was straight-jacketed in more than one way by her role as Hermione Granger and sought solace through fashion to express her own identity and choices.

As Watson told WWD in an exclusive interview:

“I have Hermione to thank, in a weird way, for my sense of style,” she said. “Playing this role, fashion was my way of expressing myself away from that school uniform. When I got the chance to dress myself, I was so thrilled to be able to be Emma and show a different side of myself. Maybe I would never have been this interested in fashion if I hadn’t played that role for so long and sometimes felt so constrained by being identified with her so much.” She became visibly excited as she continued, “I mean, I just wasn’t allowed to do anything: wasn’t allowed to cut my hair, put on nail varnish, tan, wear a bra that made my boobs in any way look [larger], have any flesh showing, wear any makeup when I was playing Hermione. I always had to back-comb my hair — ‘She looks too pretty, take down the blush or the mascara, take it off.’ Fashion was my rebellion.”

Then she does a nude scene in the latest Potter movie.

Complain away, kid. The franchise made you a millionaire.

I don’t hear Summer Glau complaining how she had to look/act 16 in Firefly.

Clearly one of the sharpest and most level-headed young actors around today and from what I’ve read of her, she will be keeping it that way. She’s got a bright future without following the path to perdition trod by so many others.

I don’t perceive it as whining. She was probably asked about it, and answered honestly. Have you seen any publicity about her in the U.S. lately? She’s been at Brown University for over a year. If she were a publicity hog, I think we’d have seen lots more stories about her. Seems to me that she’s got a pretty good head on her shoulders.

SNL did a hilarious skit about this topic a few years ago.

She gets discussed a lot on the fashion boards, she’s with Burberry now I think.

As commented above, she seems to be pretty level-headed. Compared to, say, Behatti Prinsloo (rougly the same age).

Sadly, so few people, in total, saw either "Firefly", Serenity, or "The Sarah Conner Chronicles", that she doesn't get near the publicity she should. Emma Watson gets the press, simply because so many more people know of Hermione Granger, though she does seem like she could have a good future in acting, if she desires it.

One reason to cut her hair short is to emphasize her youth. There has been a lot of loose talk about her being loose and this is one way of short-circuiting it. Of course, that only works with the morally decent set...

In a recent interview she was asked which book she would want on a deserted island, if she could only have one.

“The Bible”.

True. I brought her up, though, because in Firefly she had to hide her breasts, not show any curves or skin, and hunch around with stringy hair in her face to look like a 16 year old mental case. Quite a contrast from Sarah Connor; there she was all curves and wore lots of tight tops and had typical TV lead-girl hair.

Emma makes lots of $$ from the Potter franchise, I wonder how much she makes modeling? I suspect she blows Glau out of the water cashwise.

I was pleasantly surprised a while back- I was at a friends house and bored so I picked up Vogue and flipped pages. There, in tasteful Burberry wool, was...Hermione Granger?

I remember that great SNL skit. It featured none other than Lindsey Lohan in the Herminone role (just before she imploded) with her obvious charms distracting our heroes.

>>Then she does a nude scene in the latest Potter movie.<<

Kind of but not really.
It’s a “dream sequence” and she is pressed against the actor playing HP. You don’t see a thing. It’s more of a suggestion that they are nude.

I remember both Brooke Shields and Jodie Foster temporarily dropping out of the rat race to go to seek higher education. They didn’t do anything shutter-worthy and the paparazzi simply got bored with them and left them alone. It was amazing how one simply heard nothing about them for several years.

For them, it must have been quite relaxing, all told.
