Done for the sake of 3-D alone, it wouldn't be worthwhile.

But a script rewrite, as is typically done, might be okay.

The ultimate transition will be to what I call holographic; it means that the action can not only be seen in 3-D, but that you can change your viewpoint as well.

This would mean that every item in the "film" would have to be identified in the database, just as we have adjustable type fonts. This would require enormous memory storage capacity, but it would also mean that "refilming" could be done at any time, with relatively straightforward computer operations.

Eventually, you'll be able to put your own faces into your favorite films, do your own voice-overs, and so forth.

The only thing beyond that is a voice-controlled computer system that can mix up a movie to your specifications on the fly. Just tell Robbie the Robot what you want to see.

Today's "enormous memory storage capacity" is tomorrow's floppy disk. And I remember when floppy disk capacities were considered enormous.

We lived across the street from the local racetrack, and we would sit out on the roof of the bay window when the races were in town.

We also spent a lot of time at the track, petting the horses that were there, stabled for whatever reason. As a result, we learned to love and care for horses.

To this day, I love the smell of warm horseflesh. I love the velvet nose and the solid, sleek muscles of a thoroughbred, the tight, dense muscles of a quarter-horse, and the awesome warmth of riding bareback.

It’s been too long since I’ve been on a horse, and I know 30 minutes would stove me up for a week!!

Still, horses are awesome. Especially in snow. :o])

Flickr Hack Makes 3D Model of Any City in a Day

This research team developed a method by which to put millions of photos through an analysis engine that grouped them for geometric similarity, then calculated the relative camera locations, and used that data to turn the images into 3D models, and they did it all in a single day on a single desktop PC.  Millions of images into a few really decent models in one day without a render farm.  Sweet.

Now, if they can do this with random shots sourced from the internet, just imagine what could they do with a movie if all of the action were shot from a set of carefully planned locations. Each frame could be reproduced as a full-color 3D model that could be viewed from any angle. String them all together into a feature length movie.... Well, you get the idea.

This process also opens up the notion of virtual tourism.

Let’s say you’re on your exercise bike, wearing a display helmet. You could be pedaling around the hills of Rome, or those of San Francisco.

Time traveling, too, by using photos from a specific period.

Now get someone to work on the making of proper avatars, and we’ll be all set. (Special note: We discussed using avatars very early in the history of the Undead Thread. The ideas were interesting, but the technology wasn’t there yet.)

Just finished watching “Starship Troopers 2” on Crackle. Not impressed; takeoff on the Alien(s) series, too dark and more.

I liked the TV series. It was digitized and geared for teens, but it was fun to watch. I’ll have to see if Amazon has it, since I have the original movie.

In the meantime, I’m off to bed. My eyes are burning and itching...my neighbor may be trying to tell me to shut up and go to sleep...
