A week and a half removed from his firing, Brad Childress took consolation that his work in four-plus seasons in charge of the Minnesota Vikings left the team in "a lot better shape" than when he was hired. Childress, let go late last month after a tumultuous season marked by abrupt personnel decisions and player unrest, told the St. Paul Pioneer Press on Friday he was caught off-guard by the move -- but not completely. "What a difference 365 days can make," Childress said in a telephone interview with the newspaper from his beach home in Bonita Springs, Fla. "You pull yourself into your work the best way you can each and every week, and you never expect something like this to happen. You go into every week thinking you'll win." But a Week 11 blowout loss to the Green Bay Packers was the final game for Childress. His most lopsided home defeat as head coach dropped his overall record to 40-37, including 1-2 in the playoffs. It saw the Vikings fall to 3-7, a year after he got a contract extension as the Vikings came within a field goal of reaching the Super Bowl.

When Childress was hired by the Vikings, he promised a “kick ass offense.” Offensive players wound up kicking Childress’ ass out the door.
Childress left and Favre made all the calls in last week’s game, and they won. It doesn’t mean this is a good season, and compared to last, it is awful, but Childress caused decent and dosn’t make for positive play. Glad he is gone.
What has this guy been smoking?
Coach’s should NEVER directly blame a loss on an individual player in a post-game press conference... never, ever..
ESPECIALLY, if that player is named “Favre”.
If I owned the team, Brad would have been fired the next morning.

Then again, the Redskins weren’t the toughest of opponents, although it was a hopeful sign that the Vikings could finally win a road game.
Favre likes calling his own plays; this was a traditional job of the QB, but it’s generally frowned upon today. He’s driven multiple coaches nuts over his career with audibles on the line of scrimmage.
They were one interception by Favre away from the Super Bowl last year. Childress did a good job.
Yeah, he alienated a beloved Viking great into probably hating the franchise forever, handcuffed a hall of fame quarterback, ran his best player into probable early retirement and gave T-Jack a leash that was way too long for his level of talent.

The U.S. had the largest economy in the world last year. Obama is doing a great job.
Childress was the worst coach in the league and it is not even close.
Their QB, Favre, was involved in a scandal (sent pics of his genitals) while continuing to throw interceptions at the worst times (faking injury afterward). Can't blame that on Childress.
Childress lost his players, that's why he is gone. He'll end up as an OC somewhere and get another chance as a head coach in the future.
....and let’s not forget Adrian Peterson’s fumbles....
