NFL fines Ravens' McClain, Ngata
Pittsburgh Tribune Review ^ | 12/7/10

Posted on 12/07/2010 12:41:41 AM PST by malkee

Ravens linebacker Jameel McClain was fined $40,000, and defensive tackle Haloti Ngata was docked $15,000 by the NFL on Monday for separate hits in a 13-10 loss to the Steelers on Sunday night.

The NFL punished McClain for an illegal helmet-to-helmet hit that left Steelers tight end Heath Miller with a concussion.

Ngata was fined for hitting Ben Roethlisberger in the head while the Steelers' quarterback was in a defenseless position. Roethlisberger broke his nose on the play and had surgery on it yesterday.

Neither McClain nor Ngata were penalized for their hits.

Miller's status for next Sunday's game against the visiting Bengals is uncertain. He will have to pass a battery of neurological tests before he's allowed to return to the playing field.

The Steelers already were thin at tight end before his injury, as Matt Spaeth has missed the past two games because of post-concussion symptoms.

When asked about the hits on Miller and Roethlisberger, Steelers coach Tomlin said, "I coach. I don't officiate. I don't work in New York (where the NFL has its headquarters). I work in Pittsburgh"

Lots of talk Sunday night about whether there would be any fines. There were. But they should have been higher.

Fortunately for McClain and Ngata they were not wearing a Steelers uniform nor were they named Harrison. The fines would have been tripled in that case...

Goodell is corrupt. He clearly has the refs targeting the Steelers. No flags on the Miller hit? No flags for the hit that broke Ben’s nose? The NFL has ZERO credibility any more. No suspensions for the Andre Johnson fight - because they had a Thur night game on NFL Network? Goodell needs to be fired. Sadly the NFL has indeed become a joke under Goodell.

“Neither McClain nor Ngata were penalized for their hits.”

Because there was nothing wrong with either hit. The nfl is becoming a joke. Might as well take the equipment off and play soccer like the rest of the world.

>>Because there was nothing wrong with either hit.

Opinions aside, both hits were illegal per the official NFL rulebook.

Smacking any player, let alone a quarterback hard enough in the face mask that you get through to break their nose is patently illegal. As is helmet-to-helmet contact against anyone.

The level of intent or not is the difference when determining the amount (if any) for the fines.

Troy Polamalu is right.

Take the whole fines system out of the hands of the Commissioner.

I agree. Goodell is a lefty Obama supporter. His dad was a liberal senator long ago. Harrison got on his list when after the Steelers won the Super Bowl he refused to go to the White House and pose with BO. That started it. How about some fines for the blind officials. When will the NFL wise up. When you piss off the Rooney family, you know its bad.

Remember that Mr. Rooney is the current ambassador to Ireland. He too is a big Obama supporter. (sadly)
