Incident Occurs Along Stockton Boulevard, Police Say
SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. -- A 30-year-old mother loading her young son into a car seat was killed and five other people were hurt in a shooting Tuesday afternoon in south Sacramento, authorities said.
The attack occurred at a strip mall at 6955 Stockton Blvd., according to Sacramento police.
Crime scene tape was seen at the mall. The shooting erupted at Fly Cuts & Styles, a barber shop in the mall.
Police said two people entered the barber shop looking to target two people who were there getting haircuts. The assailants opened fire, customers returned fire and the gunfire spilled into the parking lot, authorities said.
The mother was hit and killed by a stray bullet, officials said. A bullet hole was seen in the windshield of her sport utility vehicle.
A family member identified the woman who died as Monique Nelson.
Beatrice Bailey, who said she's Nelson's aunt, said she saw the story on the news without knowing the victim was her own niece.
"It's just so sad, I just loved her to death," Bailey said.
Bailey said Nelson was a single mother who had just moved into her own apartment.
Investigators said the mother wasn't a target.
Four of the five men injured in the gunbattle have been taken to local hospitals, including an unidentified man with life-threatening injuries who was shot in the chest, Sacramento County Sheriff's Sgt. Tim Curran said. He was undergoing surgery, Curran said.
A 37-year-old man, who was one of the barbers working inside the shop, was shot in the ankle. A 28-year-old man was shot in the shoulder and leg. Another man whose age was unknown suffered a leg wound.
The fifth man, a 39-year-old male, suffered a grazing wound.
Authorities were trying to figure out who did the shooting.
At least one person suffering from a gunshot wound showed up at Mercy General Hospital on J Street, police Sgt. Norm Leong said. He said the injured person brought to Mercy General is connected to the shooting incident on Stockton Boulevard.
The 2-year-old boy was not hurt in the shooting.
Vickie Sanders said her daughter was working inside the barber shop at the time of the shooting.
"She just said she was scared, she didn't know which way to turn," Sanders said.
Curran said the people inside the barber shop "haven't been real cooperative."
"They didn't see anything, if you will," Curran said.
He also said the shooting could have been much worse.
"It's crazy. At this time of the day, with holiday shopping going on, the number of victims that we have could have risen very, very quickly," Curran said.
Damn Amish!
"They didn't see anything, if you will," Curran said.
Must have a real large rest room......
;^)
The customers opened fire....lol
Heh.
I can’t believe this article uses the word “mother” instead of the ubiquitous and childish “mom.”

Can you imagine seeing your mom die like that?
What a tragedy.
Just read header, skipped story. But I’ll take a crack at it. These were two Amish boys upset with two other Amish boys. No Mexifornia or blacks involved. Was I right????
Does anyone realize how safe and sane this country would be if we hand’t given those Amish a free boat ride over here?
