The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland will induct Tom Waits, Neil Diamond, Alice Cooper, Dr. John, and Darlene Love, according to the New York Times. Jac Holzman, who founded Elektra, and Art Rupe, who founded Specialty Records, will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award, which is given to music-industry executives. Pianist Leon Russell will receive the Award for Musical Excellence. The ceremony will be held in March

Alice Cooper stepped over the threshold and smashed into the Rock scene on the strength of the quality of his music, his act, and persona. HE ALONE gets credit for being THE Pioneer of his genre.
Ugliest inductees are yet to come (when they pat Marilyn Manson on the back for doing what Cooper and even Trent Reznor did before him...
Agree. Manson was a weak AC II, and Cooper knows it.

Greatest live performance ever, The Who at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival, that was their peak.
That’s because they weren’t dosed with acid by a prankster before they went on at 3am and didn’t have their set interrupted by a rabid protester as they were at that “superior” festival.
Funny thing is everyone at Woodstock will tell you they were tripping balls off and played lousy sets. Took 2 hours to get Hendrix coherent enough to bring him to the stage. John Sebastian will admit it. Santana was tripping so hard all they saw was hair and teeth and turned their backs to the horde out there.
IMHO there were really only two good performances at Woodstock, Ten Years After, and Sly and the Family Stone.

There’s basically a split between the Velvet fans/solo Reed fans and fans of Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal. Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal had too much rock for the art crowd, and that other stuff had too much arty crap for the rock fans.

Oh, yeah. And then you have one of the best rock riffs ever kick in! Like I said, I hope Wagner and Hunter get in the hall with Alice (who had the best band of that 70’s glam scene). Another great intro, although not as good, is the intro to Hey Joe from the Jimi Hendrix Experience Live at Winterland.

I think my favorite non-Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal Reed song is Satelite of Love. That really art stuff I could never get into.

Of all the weird hings, his hit “Poison” is *the* number one tune used by strippers.
I’m not sure how he feels about that but it’s infamy, at least.
“Along Came A Spider” rivals “Welcome To My Nightmare” for sheer theatrical “theme” perfection.
[and “Brutal Planet” is a straight up heavy, kick-ass album, IMO]

FYI, Eric Bloom of BOC spat upon the RR HoF for the sole reason that Alice was not in it.
I’m assuming he’s happy Oyster, now.

There’s a local bar band called “The Reagan Years” that plays nothing but 80s tunes.
They’re really good.
With a few exceptions [Metallica, G&R, Ozzy, releases etc] the “new rock” just does not inspire me.

This is so cool - I met Jac Holzman through the flying community, and didn’t realize he had founded Elektra Records! He attended an aviation conference I organized in the Central Coast of CA, and was just a cool guy. He just enjoyed hanging with his fellow aviators. Time for an “atta boy!” email!
I think my favorite cover of Solitary Man was performed by Chris Isaak. Haunting.
