If I am not mistaken, the 17 minutes that was removed was from “through time and space” the psychedelic drug induced travel scene after the pod enters into the monolith portal at Jupiter (Saturn in the book).

I saw it at the Uptown in Washington (D.C.) in 1967. The long, long journey to the surface of Jupiter, or wherever, has seemed shorter when I’ve seen it since then.
