Good Samaritans Face Fine After Rescuing Deer From Icy Water
WJZ TV Baltimore ^ | 12/17/10 | Alex DeMetrick

BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) – They fought to save a life, and now they say they’ll fight the fine.

It all revolves around the rescue of a deer trapped in icy water Thursday night.

Alex DeMetrick reports that good deed was rewarded with tickets.

Strangers banded together to pull a deer out of the freezing water of the Patapsco River on Thursday night.

“We seen the deer going under,” said Khalil Abusakran. “It couldn’t maintain. It was starting to freeze, and it was really getting bad.”

Abusakran brought a raft, and Jim Hart joined him.

“We had oars and shovels to break the ice, for the deer to get out,” Abusakran said.

But in the excited aftermath of the rescue, a natural resources police officer on the scene wrote both men a ticket.

“And he didn’t say anything,” Jim Hart said. “We went in and out of the water numerous times. He didn’t stop us at all.”

They say they were ticketed for not wearing life vests, although both are over the age for mandatory use of flotation devices.

Only in MD ...

I live in MD - was a forestry major in college. Worked a deer check-in during deer hunting season. A milkman brought a deer that he hit to the check-in station [its the law]. He had hit it with his truck as it was chased by dogs and hunters. The DNR officer wrote him a ticket for not having a license or deer tag ...

I have a strong urge to take a baseball bat to the kneecaps of this “natural resources police officer”.

Catch the deer and let it loose in city hall.

Tear up the ticket and say "Bite me". They can't arrest us all. There are more of us, than them. And we're better armed. Time for them to remember that.

“a natural resources police officer”

I see more wrong with this. It sort of encapsulates the totalitarian regime we are becoming trapped in.

There has got to be a Police Chief or Sheriff in Maryland who just participated in their First Joint Conference that will rectify this Great Injustice! Fix It Now!

It is a perfect Maryland story, but I think the same thing could happen in California. The two states have a lot in common.

The idiot who wrote the ticket will of course be promoted, not fired.

“.......a natural resources police officer on the scene wrote both men a ticket.”

Joe Liberal with a badge out of a box of Kashi writes a ticket for no floatation devices in the rescue of a deer, and these guys have to fight the ticket in a legitimate American criminal court!?

I’ve been reading some amazing stuff going on in the country I used to think I knew lately, but this one has to be one of the most outrageous.

Their mistake was not plugging the rescued deer hole with the same-sized natural resources police officer.

I am speechless!
in my opinion the entire northeastern portion of this country has reached a point of no return.
I really do not think there is any hope for the states north of north Carolina and east of Ohio. Maybe the will form their own country and leave the rest of us alone.

“My favorite drive thru Maryland is on Interstate 81.”

Is that because you’re in and out before you know it?

I have to detour around this section of 81 next week because Maryland does not honor reciprocity with my FL CCW. All the other states on our route do (with certain minor restrictions).

Indeed. I’d say the prime example is Her Royal Highness Nancy Pelosi, literally born to “political royalty” in Baltimore and now a major figure in San Francisco’s Demo Party machine.

Maybe you’re trying to be humorous. If so, read no further in this post.

But in case you’re serious, I’d say you should learn something about the Federal firearms laws — which make it perfectly legal for an interstate traveler to carry a gun thru a jurisdiction where the gun in question would otherwise be illegal, as long as the gun owner is allowed legally to possess the gun at both his destination and his trip’s point of origination.

(You will, however, need to stow the gun unloaded in a secure and locked container, preferably in the trunk — if your vehicle has a trunk. And you can’t spend more than one night in the “forbidden” jurisdiction.)
