True Grit - Great Movie for the Season
Vanity | Dec 23rd, 2010 | Self

Posted on 12/23/2010 3:42:18 PM PST by Mariner

I know, many of you can't bear the idea of somebody, anybody, taking on a role once played by John Wayne. I too was skeptical as I am a devoted Duke fan.

However, I'm also a great fan of Jeff Bridges and the Coen Brothers.

And, I can tell you this: The Dude does The Duke proud.

This is certainly the best Western since Unforgiven and probably in the top 10 ever. Yes, it's far better than the original in every respect.

Acting, dialogue, mood and photography come together to be the best movie the Coen Brothers have made.

It's not a story about vengeance. It's a story about justice. And what a story it is. The final scene before the Coda, when Rooster and Mattie are riding through the night is one of the most heart-wrenching scenes you will see in a movie. Ever.

Both are deserving of Academy Awards, as are the Coen Brothers in multiple categories.

Go see this movie in a theater...soon...

Heretic ! (well you asked for it)

Only John Wayne can say, “Damn Texican, saved my live twice. And once when he was dead”.

For me, watching this remake would be like sacrificing my first born. Never will happen.

Why can't people just let the great thing be? For example, would you like to see a new version of the “Statue of Liberty”? Or how about the country's Flag?

Nope, not me. Leave a good thing alone.

Hey Mariner, I'm pleased that the movie remake brought you enjoyment. However, for me, a true-blue True Grit fan, I feel insulted that Bollywood would do this.

No hard feelings. RedShawk.

I've only seen the trailer but if anybody could play the part of Rooster Cogburn other than John Wayne it's Bridges.

I agree with the other poster about Glen Campbell. I didn't like him in the film.

I watched the movie last night! LOVED this version.

BTW - Anyone else get the feeling that Indians were not well liked?

“My favorite Wayne movie is The Shootist, he was both “John Wayne” the icon in it, as well as John Wayne the man.”

One of my favorites too. Ron Howard was once asked “What do you regard as your best Hollywood experience?” His answer was simply “Appearing in a movie with John Wayne.” I think Wayne had a special effect on actors, even those as liberal as Ron Howard and Henry Fonda. Wayne was an mans’ man, a foavorite of many leading ladies and perhaps the greatest conservative, save maybe Reagan.

Glen Campbell stank, and so did the girl.

Too bad Ron Howard had to be in it.

He was still a punk then, not a full fledged libtard. Scatman Crothers more than made up for him.

Brings a tear to my eye every time I think of The Duke riding on top of a tank into that college in Berkley in the '60s.

We agree:)

In fact, I can't think of a Western I liked better and that's my favorite genre.

I'm just tired of all the remakes. The world needs The Alamo 6, King Kong 15, Rocky 23, etc.

Like reality tv, as long as they can just do remakes Hollywood loves it. It costs hardly anything in time or money to regurgitate trash. Creativity is what costs money.

Talked me into it, but I don’t go to theaters, ever. I just can’t stand the rudeness. And this from a film maker and producer (www.rockinthewall.com). BTW, just saw Jeff Bridges in a interesting movie called “the Door in the Floor.” Pretty obscure, but as usual, he’s great.

Got a man crush on Daniel Craig as 007. Absolutely great. In many ways, better than Connery.

I saw it at the drive-in...where all great American movies should be first screened:)

Took a little nip and some corn dodgers with me. $7 per person.

“...no no...we'll camp here...Just checking for signs..)

Hey Mariner: His wife in the movie was...? If you give, I tell ya.

best quotes:

In “Lewbowski”, “The Dude abides.”

In “Grit”, His ex-wife once told him, “A love of decency does not abide in you.”

My ex still says that about me many years later.

Feel free to spend your money however you wish - there's no heresy in that.

But since I see the movie has both Matt Damon and Josh Brolin, I don't think I'll be sending any of my greenbacks their way.
