Michelle Obama joined an American festive tradition when she fielded calls to a Santa-tracking switchboard last night.
The North American Aerospace Command (NORAD) has been tracking Santa's Christmas Eve travels for 55 years but this is the first time an American First Lady has joined in the fun.
A telephone link from Hawaii, where the Obamas are spending Christmas break, to NORAD, the joint U.S.-Canada command that monitors the North American skies from a control centre in Colorado Springs, allowed Mrs Obama to speak to excited American children keen to know Santa's whereabouts.
The White House said Mrs Obama took calls for 40 minutes and spoke with children from at least a dozen families.
'I was ecstatic because I was talking to the president's wife,' said Evan Race, 10.
'I was really surprised' said his eight-year-old sister Anna. Seven-year-old Colin Race also got to talk with Mrs Obama.
NORAD Tracks Santa, the official name of the exercise, began in 1955 when a Colorado Springs newspaper ad invited kids to talk to Santa on a hotline.

I wouldn’t know where to start. Note that both her daughters appear to have given up trying to put their arms around them. The First Lady’s buttocks may be one of the marvels of the modern world.
