ATLANTA -- Sleet and snow caused major gridlock on Atlanta's downtown connector Sunday night.

Shortly after sleet and snow began to fall in metro Atlanta, several agencies e-mailed and called to report accidents across the area.

The same weather system moving across north Georgia is forecast to bring several inches of snow and ice -- causing schools to cancel classes and airlines to cancel hundreds of flights.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Tony Thomas snapped a picture of downtown Atlanta Sunday night, which showed some streets being deserted as the winter storm approached.

Gov. Sonny Perdue declared a state of emergency in Georgia as the state braces for a blast of winter weather expected to dump snow and coat roadways with ice.

If the streets are deserted, how can there be gridlock?

The ones driving 60mph on ice are nuts. It reminds me of going to Indianapolis a few years ago in the snow/sleet on the interstate and everybody was driving like maniacs. Somebody came rushing up behind me and passed me like I was sitting still but he didnt make it more than a mile before he was off in a ditch on the side of the highway.

Snowstorm in the south ping.

Though not addressed to me, they probably don't need the ping...a glance outside might be sufficient.

We get a little snow about twice a year but this is a bit more than usual.

Funny watching the dogs trying to walk without touching the ground.

They don't like it any more than I do.

As I recall my experiences in Atlanta, if you drive 60MPH at almost any time on I-75,285,or 85, your car will be totalled in a fiery rear-end collision.

When I lived there, I was given the finger on I-285 by a woman, probably in at least her late 60s, as I drove 5 miles over the limit in the right lane.

Global warming always causes more snow (except when it doesn’t). More snow is always caused in areas that don’t usually get snow (because its warmer)

This ice/snow storm is due to political rhetoric and anti-government sentiment.

The above is total nonsense of course but so is 90% of what’s been printed in the last 24 hrs.

This global warming event has deposited about 3 inches on our yard in Lilburn, GA and no sign of let up. Looks like we may get 5-6 inches by tomorrow.

I thought it might be Palin’s fault. It’s causing a lot of accidents and I think it should be banned /sarc

We’ve got about 3-4 inches already in Cherokee Co., and much more on the way. I’m listening to a scanner right now, there aren’t too many accidents, but here the snow is powdery. South of us it is snow and ice.

I’m teased my homeschooled kids that we don’t get snow days ;-)

I just found out via Facebook that school is closed on Monday (my kids attend Catholic school). There really doesn’t look like that much on the ground, and since I hail from the Midwest, I should know ;) The kids will be thrilled, although they saw much more at the grandparents’ in Indiana in Christmas and got to go sledding on multiple days.

BTW, they drive like maniacs on I-465 in Indianapolis regardless of the weather :)

Lol, the last time I was on 465 I thought about getting out and walking because 465 was the largest parking lot in Marion County at the time.
