>>"professional day"<<
"professional day" is another name for professional development. Frequently states' mandate courses for teachers and you have to accrue credits for these courses to keep your certification current. Most towns require the district [b/c contract]to provide the courses to be given/taken during a normal school day. NOt sure about the private school model..often they mimic the PS.

Boston proper is terrible at handling snow removal, streets and sidewalks too narrow - no place to put the snow. Plus, too many cars parked on the streets. During really big storms, dump trucks will take snow and dump it in Boston Harbor.
Suburbs however are a different story. Excellent snow removal in general. In the suburb I live in, there are so many snowplows that I'm able to get in my car and safely go places within an hour after the last flakes fall.

I have 2 favorite funky streets [happen to be on opposite coasts. Acorn street above on Beacon Hill] and Lombard St in SF.

“Doesnt everybody who lives in New England own a shovel? Or do they toss them after each storm”
When I lived in Providence I left my snow shovel leaning against the back door while I went into the house to check the time. When I came back outside there were footprints in my driveway and my ONLY snow shovel was gone.I had to finish shovelling with an old garden shovel. And I lived in a good neighborhood.
