I see that the Germans and the Japanese were allowed to maintain the essence of their cultures. Would you say that the South was permitted to maintain the essence of its culture?

Compared to the usual behavior of victors in civil wars, the Union was very kind and generous to the seceding states. What do you think was the essence of Southern culture? It sounds as if you agree with Alexander Stevens who said that slavery was the cornerstone of the Confederacy.
