Yes, what binds all Americans together (all individuals and all levels of Gov'ts) is our culture of debt - spending way more than we have, individually and collectively.
China has a bit of a different culture.

It was all such a revelation to me, Rio, and he spoke those words of truth and it hit me.
So that’s what all that different stuff is...it’s a different culture.
Never realized that before. First time I ever really saw it.
