Difference is that Tea Partiers are trying to build up the influence of the church to combat socialism.

Burns was trying to tear down the influence of the church, thus aiding socialistic ideas.

His "free-love" practices are a dead giveaway. He would have been fully content belonging to the SDS in the 60's.
