Doesn’t the physics of the displacement of water with these big cruise ships tend to aid in keeping them away from each other when they get too close?

I've heard that naval vessels, transferring fuel, have to be piloted very carefully, because hydrodynamic effects tend to "suck" them together. I don't know if this is really true. Any experts here?
