According to Heavens Above Satellite Tracker you had this going over about 7:00 pm.
TITAN 4B R/B 1.5 19:04:53 10° SSW 19:09:14 55° SE 19:09:14 55° SE
It would have lined up with Orion very nicely.
This was a rocket booster, so, it would have been tumbling and looking like it was moving in a odd motion. If you look, you can see these kind of things all the time right after sunset or just before sunrise.

One day, we saw something really weird in the western skies. We grabbed our AR’s and headed towards it. Finally realized it was a missile launched from Vanden Burg Air Force Base that went off course so they blew it up. It makes a HUGE impact on the sky. We felt a bit like country hicks thinking we might have to shoot us some aliens.

Was the object near the horizon? It sounds like Sirius, the Dog Star as it is known, in Canis Major. When stars are near the horizon and very bright like Sirius our turbulent atmosphere causes them to “jump” around. This does not always happen because the atmosphere is not always that turbulent.
