Redskins owner Dan Snyder filed a $2 million lawsuit Wednesday against the parent company of the Washington City Paper. The suit stems from an article written by City Paper reporter Dave McKenna in November.
In the lawsuit filed in New York, Snyder says that the City Paper has "engaged in an ongoing campaign" to "smear his business and personal reputation," has published more than 50 columns in which he "was the subject of derision, ridicule and/or vilification," and that the November cover story on him "featured an anti-Semitic depiction of Mr. Snyder with horns on his head, bushy eyebrows, and surrounded by dollar signs." The lawsuit claims that the article contained "numerous outrageous, false and defamatory statements of and concerning" Snyder.
"Simply put, no reasonable person would accept the publication of these types of false, malicious, and/or defamatory statements about them or their spouses," according to the lawsuit. "Nor would any reasonable person tolerate an anti-Semitic caricature of himself or herself prominently displayed on the front pages of a newspaper containing false and malicious allegations."
The Washington City Paper's publisher, Amy Austin, responded to the allegations by saying:
"It's extremely unfortunate that Snyder believes it's appropriate to threaten City Paper with litigation because he objects to our coverage. As a 30-year old newspaper and vibrant website committed to both in-depth news reporting and full-throated commentary, we do not believe that using the court system to stifle or chill free speech is ever appropriate. In this case, its especially shabby: As a well known public figure, Snyder has more than ample ability and resources to respond to coverage he does not like, including through his significant public relations apparatus. Lest there be any doubt, we have offered him a forum to do so in our pages, and that invitation stands. Should he elect to actually file a lawsuit, we have directed our counsel to defend the case vigorously."
Snyder said in the lawsuit that any monetary damages recovered would be given to groups devoted to assisting the homeless.
Well, he’s no Jerry Jones..................
Still won’t improve their record
Daniel Snyder is a plague that I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy. Inconceivable incompetence combined with undefeatable ignorance.
And the worst part is, he'll probably continue to drive that franchise into the ground for the next thirty years.
Danny Boy, nobody thinks you’re an anti-Semite. Now we Redskins fans *do* think you’re an incompetent fool of an NFL owner who needs a good ass-kicking by the ghost of Jack Kent Cooke, followed by a beatdown by a drunk John Riggins. But you’re not an anti-Semite. Maybe only a small minion of Satan.

If you haven’t read the article that’s lead to this I can tell you its a must read. I knew Snyder was your typical ego driven owner of today, but did not realize how bad he actually was.
NFL isn’t looking too great with owners like Snyder Davis and the Browns...
It would be interesting to know what specific statements made by the paper are false. Drawings of him with horns won’t cut it.
How about devoting it to finding a quarterback?
They don't need a quarterback. They need an offensive line and a stable offensive system -- without that, any quarterback is just going to be a tackling dummy.
John Riggins beats him down every day on his radio broadcast. ;-)
If there ever was a reason to impeach a sitting owner...
He probably even voted against Reagan Day...
I love me some Riggo. I’ve been a Skins fan since the days of Riggins and the Hogs. It’s a natural evolution from my visceral childhood hatred of the Plowboys.
What I loved about the late-’80s Skins (as a brief resident of northern Virginia) was how normal and accessible they were. It was no big deal to see a couple of Hogs pounding beers at lunch hour around Fairfax or Herndon (during the off-season, of course). I was getting gas in Herndon once when this unexceptional three-year-old Saab 900 pulled up at the next pump...Doug Williams got out and pumped his own gas. This was the year after he won the Super Bowl!
Danny Boy has ruined that team to the point where if he gave it up today, it’d probably take a new and motivated owner years to recover and compete in a division as tough as theirs.

It was sheer delight watching Riggo and Todd Castleberry rip this little pipsqueak apart last night on the John Riggins show! I despise Danny boy more than I can say...he’s a crook, an ass, a fool and a popinjay. He is a cancer on the Washington Redskins, The City of Washington and the NFL! He is the lowest of the low, the biggest fool at the international fools convention and the bane of every Redskin fans existence. And...I don’t like him very much.
The nickname “Toxic Shrimp” is just awesome. It fits the man to a T.
Your right...I laughed out loud at that last night. For all the hard partying and the hits he took while playing I’ve got to say Riggo has held up damn well. He’s pretty sharp and I wouldn’t want to be on his bad side.
what an @ss
I lived up in NYC during the 1980’s. The way Snyder runs the redskins reminds me of the way Steinbrenner ran the Yankees during that time period. It wasn’t until he was publicly shamed on saturday night live and Seinfeld in the early 90’s that he began to change his ways. even then, he didn’t win didn’t close out the yankees longest losing streak until 1996.
And this in a league that has Al Davis and Jerry Jones as owners.
Not true. Snyder's crime has been his wanton destruction of a storied franchise. He took one of the premier teams of the NFL and made it a laughing stock. He could be forgiven for not having a winner if it weren't for the fact that every singler bad move by the Redskins in over 10 years was done at his direction! From the horrible fan experience at FedEx (which improved somewhat this year) to the terrible, stupid, boneheaded personnel moves, ie hiring McNabb and Haynesworth and the revolving door to the head coach's office. I mean really...who else in the NFL would have hired Jim Zorn as head coach and then once that stupid move was made who else, (besides Al Davis) would have treated the gguy in such a disrespectful, shabby and dishonest way? No sorry my friend but Snyder is guilty on many, many crimes...not just of not producing a winner.
