By far, the vast majority of union contracts make the reasons for absence a moot point.
The employer can assign priority work periods where penalties are increased, but in most cases, cannot delve into determining what constitutes “just cause.”

Our company sent an email that if we are absent this weekend, we need to have a doctor's excuse or paperwork from the Emergency Department.
Our company is a hospital and, understandably, people can't be calling off willy-nilly and having co-workers take on extra patients.
I'm OK - I work 7-3 today and will be home in time to watch the Super Bowl.
