Sucker Punch Squad: Script for Meryl Streep’s Margaret Thatcher Bio Smells Like a Hit Job
BigHollywood ^ | 2/9/2011 | Pam Meister

Editor’s note: Script reviews of upcoming projects have been around for as long as there’s been an Internet. Therefore it’s no secret that a film can evolve into something quite different from its screenplay. Please keep in mind that this article represents a look at a particular script and not the final product.

-snip-

When BH editor extraordinaire John Nolte asked me if I wanted to do a Sucker Punch review of the script for The Iron Lady, the upcoming film featuring Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher, my response was (and I quote), “Yes!!!” After reading the script, however, I almost wish I had declined the offer.

-snip-

Denis also – and this is key – claims that what Lady Thatcher achieved during her long and storied career was really not any of her doing. He says that all of her accomplishments “would have happened anyway darling” because that’s “the way politics always goes” and she was “just in the right place at the right time.” He continues by saying that she’s “yesterday’s news, just another footnote in history.”

Isn’t that the narrative about Ronald Reagan, Lady Thatcher’s international friend and ally? He had nothing to do with the fall of the Soviet Union and the eventual destruction of the Berlin Wall – he just happened to be in office when it happened. Mikhail Gorbachev is the one who deserves all of the credit, right? In this, The Iron Lady is simply another vehicle to for the contemporary Left to rewrite history more to their liking, despite polls like this one where Lady Thatcher is considered the most influential woman 20 years after leaving office.

I won’t view it. I despise hit pieces on our heroes.

omg, a jerk leftist (and quite over-rated at that) playing a Great Lady.

It’s beyond me why people think this streep person is such a good actress when all she does is be a chameleon. It’s the makeup staff who deserve the credit.

Rewriting historical facts to support a political agenda? Joseph Goebbels would be so proud.

You know, they could make a real barn burner about Bill Clinton, and they wouldn’t have to make anything up.

If this is indeed a hit job, it will bomb at the box office.
An accurate and positive betrayal of Thatcher would result in moderate success.

Prediction: Leftist, POS, loser of a film, don’t waste your time

This seems to be a British/European production. British writer, director and producer.

I loathe Streep's acting and no longer go to see anything that she does.

She is always the same: she affects some foreign accent, cries and her nose turns red. That's the extent of her acting technique. I've never found a single performance of hers to be moving in any way.

Thatcher will be remembered as a giant on the world political stage whose successes were manifold.

Name one film of Streep's, in which she is the protagonist, that will be remembered as one of the greatest films of all time.

She sure has played a lot of historical figures...Julia Child, Ethel Rosenberg, Karen Silkwood, Karen Blixen, Roberta Guasppari, and Lindy Chamberlain!

Streep will do fine as long as she does not sing, dance, or speak.

For a time, maybe still (I don’t care to find out) Streep had
a house in the northwestern corner of Connecticut. The proles annoyed her so intensely she went to the First Selectman (mayor) and asked if the natives couldn’t be made to stay home on the weekends because they were cluttering up the streets and stores trying to do their shopping when the elitists from the Upper West Side were trying to do their chores. (Ever heard of Zabar’s, Meryl? Do your freaking shopping there, then drive to your weekend home.)

“Which may be why I remember and love the music from Out of Africa but don’t remember the movie.”

She got the clap, then her farm burned down and was left mostly penniless.

This was after the only true love of her life died.

Really, if you don't like Streep, you should see it again.

The score is wonderful as well.

This pisses me off to no end. The Soviets were brought to their knees by Reagan, Thatcher, and John Paul II. But the idiot left thinks that Gorbachev, a hard-core communist “just decided” for no reason at all to dissolve the ideology he had devoted his life to.
