I think a penny tip is entirely appropriate for poor service. However no tip, or a 5% tip, when you have treated the wait staff poorly or made a huge mess is infuriating to me.

I'd suggest doing the business a favor. If the service is that poor, it needs to be brought to the manager's attention as well.
