The Securities and Exchange Commission today charged a group of seven individuals who perpetrated a fraudulent pump-and-dump scheme in the stock of a sham company that purported to provide products and services to fight global warming.

It was only a matter of time; global warming might as well have been made for stock scams. Con men are attracted to gulls like flies to...fly food.

Jonathan R. Curshen, a Sarasota, Fla., resident who founded and led Red Sea.

Robert L. Weidenbaum of Coral Gables, Fla., a stock promoter who operates a company called CLX & Associates.

Michael S. Krome of Lake Grove, N.Y., a lawyer who allegedly wrote a fraudulent opinion letter.

Interesting and maybe I’m showing my ignorance but how do you write a fraudulent opinion letter?

Can they prove you don’t believe what you wrote?

Perhaps he misrepresented case law cited in his opinion letter to convince investors that it meant something different than it did. Or perhaps he stated that a particular security being offered was legitimate when it was really bogus.
