The Duchess of Windsor's fabulous outfits go under the hammer
The Daily Mail Online ^ | 3-5-11 | Liz Jones

What I love most of all is the envelope handbag in black crocodile. Its clasp is engraved with a ‘W’ and an ‘S’, with the numbers ‘30 x 1934’ alongside, denoting the date October 30, 1934. This bag was given to Wallis Simpson by the besotted Edward VIII — but the precise significance of the date — two years before he abdicated the throne to marry her — has never been identified. The label inside says ‘Dior’. Inside, in a tiny crocodile pouch, is a comb. While I sit, with the relics of an incredible life scattered around me in a huge, freezing warehouse in South London, where Wallis’s outfits have been gathered for auction, I breathe in that slightly musty smell of clothes that have not been worn for decades, and it seems the world has not changed at all, not really.

Go to the link to view the clothes and accessories. It's hard not to classify this couple as sad & wasted lives. Thank goodness he abdicated.

Isn’t it odd that these relics wound up in the hands of Muhhamed Al Fayed? (Dodi’s father). And what is he doing with Kate Middleton’s dress? This is all too creepy.

Didn’t they already sell her jewelry, years ago? Some of that was really classy. The clothes don’t impress me that much.

Yes, I think that most of the jewelry was sold some years ago. Apparently there is still some left. (See earrings)

Didn’t this woman ever wear anything out? I’d certainly hate to have someone putting MY sleepwear up for auction!

I think this man’s fascination with all things semi-royal is sick. Kate Middleton’s dress from a fashion show? I wonder how he got hold of that? This must drive the Queen and Prince Philip nuts.

And tell me why Kate Middleton wants to wear Diana’s engagement ring? Considering what happened to that marriage, I say that ring is cursed — if I believed in curses. If William wanted to reuse the stone, fine. But to give his fiance a ring given to his mother by his father who treated her so shabbily seems like a poor way to start a marriage. He should have changed the setting, at least.

It looks like she didn’t wear things out; if you’re going to keep up with fashion, you don’t wear the same outfit many times.

Why did she have her picture taken holding a pocketbook up on a table? Seems like an odd pose. Is this an early example of “product placement”?

What on earth did Edward see in this woman?

Himself? If you read the article, they were both very interested in fashion and appearance. Psychologists have written that if one person wants to capture the interest of the opposite sex, they should “mirror” them in all things.

For instance, if one rests his chin on his hand while talking, the other should copy the pose when answering. Perhaps he was dumb enough to fall for that old trick.

She was stylish, elegant and domineering and he was a masochistic closeted homosexual.

Well, speak right up, Gatun! LOL. Nice to “see” you this morning. I trust that it is warmer in your neck of the woods than it is here. (Fresh snow on the ground.)

Hello, afraidfortherepublic.

Lovely to see you too.

“Well, speak right up, Gatun!”

I wanted to speak up, but I didn’t now how U.S. Freepers would take it.

Those photos of Kate wearing Diana’s beautiful ring makes my skin crawl. It is total disrespect. As you said, it also has a cruse.

Oh absolutely. Come to Panama and warm up. Right now we just finished with a wonderful warm shower that started about 1-1/2 hours ago. In the evenings, I put on the air conditioner. Life is wonderful here in paradise.

I was told by an English lady friend of mine - she died in 1999 at age 103 - was born in England in 1896 - that Wallis had learned some ‘courtesan’ tricks in China - she related a couple of them and I cut her off. There are some things I'm glad I never knew about.
