This really isn’t about CAIR; Fred’s program was hardly a ratings success, and WMAL was looking to make a change. Drew Hayes, the program director who supervises both WMAL and WLS in Chicago, banned Mrs. Fred, knowing that Grandy would resign.

The money they make in radio. When I was in it a hundred bucks a week was normal. And that’s why I’m not in it anymore.

The night of Nixon’s resignation I started putting callers on the air and the “Talk Back Show” was born. It was a hit in the small town. Maybe I should have hung in there.
