NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Americans often fret about the price of gasoline, which has surged dramatically in recent days, fueled by turmoil in oil-producing nations in the Middle East and North Africa.
But the price of gas in America lags far behind its European counterparts. While Americans tear their hair out at the pump, Europeans watch them enviously from across the Atlantic.
Most Europeans pay at least double what Americans do. Some of them, including the Greeks and the Scandinavians, shell out even more.
In the U.S., the nationwide average for the price of gas was $3.53 per gallon on Thursday, according to AAA. The price has risen for 16 consecutive days, jumping 34 cents.
But that's still less than half the $9.28 per gallon paid in Oslo, according to Din Side, a Norwegian search and news site that monitors gas prices, among other things.
"The difference between countries comes down to taxes and subsidies," said Tom Kloza, the chief oil analyst for Oil Price Information Service. "Prices are incredibly high in Europe because of the stiff taxes that EU countries put on fuel. The same holds true for many other countries."

Why should we care what they pay in Europe?
European gas taxes go a long way toward financing their socialist cess pools. Let them rot.
Who thinks they don’t pay enough taxes?
Gas prices in Indonesia have been stable through the whole Mideast matter . Somplaces it is $.55/gal
Does not mean we should. It means they're paying too much!
Liberal logic - Everyone must lower themselves to be equal with scum. Not, lift up the scum.
And we drive at least three times as far as they do.
Yeah, well liberals think we are getting a break because the government is not screwing us a badly as the Europeans get shafted.
If the average European is too stupid to want to keep his own money, that’s his problem. Here, we are going to fight to keep what we’ve earned.
Subsidized fuel and price controls will do that.

The Libs have these stories ready whenever a Dem is in the white hut. Keep wtaching TVbecause you are supporting this.
If you think things here are any better you are delusional. At least they do not have a muslim leader. Thank idiots who watch Obama TV for destroying america,.
Europe made their socialist bed, now they can sleep in it. Who cares what happens to those idiots and how does this make it easier for us to pump $4.00 gas!? We have oil reserves that could easily be accessed from numerous ways and locations. “It could be a lot worse” articles like this one should ignite Americans to drill baby drill! Instead most will say...”he has a point”. “We should be thankful blah, blah”.
Love how the libtard media is now downplaying the price of gas here, when back when Bush was in office they had an absolute COW over it.
Earth to CNN!!!!....
I DONT LIVE IN FRIGGIN EUROPE!!!!!!!!!!
Ray LaHood , for one.
Because it shows the folly of the left's plan.
The left believes that if they can drive up gas prices in America, it will cause Americans to turn to more green/alternative energy sources. That's why you hear people in the Obama administration making comments about higher gas prices not necissarily being a bad thing.
Gas in Norway is more than double the US price (currently $9.28) and has been for a while. Has that caused them to abandon gas cars for electrics or even hybrids? No, because even at those high prices it is still cheaper to operate a conventional gas car than an electric/hybrid (way cheaper).
Ask a greenine how high gas prices would have to go to get people buying electric cars in big numbers? Demand an actual number. Whatever number they say, I'll gurantee it will be way lower than the European cost of gas has been for decades. Point out their number is too low, Europe proves it.
The correct number is $24 a gallon just to have gas cars and electric cars break even (that also assumes the price of electricity doesn't rise). $24 a gallon is a number we will never reach, which means the greenie plan of raising gas prices won't work.
It is important to know what Europe pays to point out the folly of the greenie's plan.
They have high speed rail and their countries are small, nothing like how we live. Also, they have milked the government for benefits and now are paying the price. Now they get high gas AND less benefits plus crapping healthcare. But, of course, with Obama in charge we are
just a few steps behind.
