Former Grateful Dead soundman and famous LSD chemist Owsley 'Bear' Stanley dies in car crash

A 76-YEAR-OLD man who was killed when his car ran off the road in far north Queensland was reportedly Owsley `Bear’ Stanley, a 1960s counter-revolutionary and the first man to produce LSD en masse.

Stanley’s car ran off the road on the Kennedy Highway between Davies Ck and Koah on Saturday.

He was also an accomplished sound engineer and the long-time soundman and financier for psychedelic rock band the Grateful Dead.

Former Rolling Stones and Grateful Dead tour manager Sam Cutler, who lives in Brisbane, released a statement on behalf of Stanley’s family confirming his death.

Stanley became an Australian citizen in 1996 and lived on the Atherton Tablelands, where he worked as an artist.

Stanley helped lay the foundation for the psychedelic era and produced LSD at his labs in San Francisco.

Dead hippies aren’t much fun.
Come to think of it, neither are the live ones.

Counter-revolutionary? So what what the revolution he was trying to counter?

Many’s the long night I’ve dreamed of cheese - toasted, mostly.

KID CHARLEMAGNE

While the music played you worked by candlelight
Those San Francisco nights
You were the best in town
Just by chance you crossed the diamond with the pearl
You turned it on the world
That’s when you turned the world around
Did you feel like Jesus
Did you realize
That you were a champion in their eyes

On the hill the stuff was laced with kerosene
But yours was kitchen clean
Everyone stopped to stare at your technicolor motor home
Every A-Frame had your number on the wall
You must have had it all
You’d go to L.A. on a dare
And you’d go it alone
Could you live forever
Could you see the day
Could you feel your whole world fall apart and fade away

CHORUS:
Get along, get along Kid Charlemagne
Get along Kid Charlemagne

Now your patrons have all left you in the red
Your low rent friends are dead
This life can be very strange
All those dayglow freaks who used to paint the face
They’ve joined the human race
Some things will never change
Son you were mistaken
You are obsolete
Look at all the white men on the street

CHORUS

Clean this mess up else we’ll all end up in jail
Those test tubes and the scale
Just get them all out of here
Is there gas in the car
Yes, there’s gas in the car
I think the people down the hall
Know who you are

Careful what you carry
‘Cause the man is wise
You are still an outlaw in their eyes

CHORUS

and the first man to produce LSD en masse.

Eh, The Sandoz Corporation was making it in Europe for years before Owsley became the first NON-PHARMACIST to make it "en masse". And he wasn't much a tripper either, he made $$$ off of it.

Even the East Coast Ivy League intellectuals (of which Timothy was a part) thought the West Coast acid party scene (with Hell Angels bikers and trashcans full of LSD dosed punch) was a wrongheaded approach. It certainly killed off any therapeutic research for the use of LSD.

Counter-revolutionary? So what what the revolution he was trying to counter?

Being a capitalist drug dealer among a bunch of "free society" hippies. Come to think of it, the Grateful Dead demanded that they get paid for their gigs at Woodstock and The Festival Express as well...

Owsley was also well known for despising vegetarianism and for his efforts to live on 100% animal diet.... meat, chicken, fish, dairy.... as much as possible. I have seen his posts on the internet about it. He was an active poster on the subject. He did get cancer in 2004 but kept up with his animal diet

Grateful Dead performed
08/04/71 at the
Terminal Island Correctional Facility - San Pedro, CA, where Stanley was then incarcerated.
