This is an unmitigated disaster. It’s only a matter of time before they launch a chemical attack on Israel, and then all hell will break loose.
I said from the beginning, while MANY others at this forum were demanding Obama get on the support-the-rebels bandwagon, that before we gave any support to the “rebels” we needed to be sure we were not buying a “pig in poke” (An offering or deal that is foolishly accepted without being examined first. http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/a-pig-in-a-poke.html )
Of course many here were so willing to portray Obama as simply weak for not being first to support the “rebels”. Now some of the same people here want to blame Obama for supporting the rebels as if he is doing that because the rebels are working with terrorists.
My own sense is that Obama did not care just who the Libyan “rebels” were, as much as he simply did not want to get into another Middle East military venture. His early reticence, no matter his reasoning, may have been a better course, as now we are in a venture largely hoped for most by Europeans and supported by some in the Arab league, and all out of their own collective self-interest; not ours.
These revelations should be given a huge public uplift by Conservatives and with the goal of pressuring Obama to demand that the Europeans do their own dirty work, outside of NATO and without us.
Ghaddafi should NEVER have been given polite company with the U.S., even in 2003. After the invasion of Iraq, when Ghaddi said he wanted to talk, our offer should have been nothing more than our agreement to NOT go and destroy the WMD materials he had that he wanted to turn over to us - end of offer.
It’s sikening now to listen to British and other European diplomats denounce what a thugish tyrant Ghaddafi is, while the Brits and B.P oil made a deal to send Ghaddadi’s bomber home and everyone sat silent as Libya, under Ghaddafi was elevated to the head of the table on the U.N. human rights council.
They’re all sickening hypcrites. Ghaddafi was always the monster they are now willing to admit. That’s a fact. Ghaddafi ruled by the psychological terror of what WOULD happen if people protested. The fact that he can now demonstrate that does not mean he was a nice guy before and just now became the monster. The entire diplomatic corps across all of “the west” should be denounced for their decades of hypocrisy and fired en mass.
Who is going to remind everyone of the military equipment deals Obama was ready to sign with Libya before the current events.
Obama too has no moral standing on this issue. He had no principles concerning Ghaddafi before he knew there was a rebel movement, and now he just wanted to be popular with our “allies”, joining a venture in support of a “pig in a poke”.
