All is well once more in the world of Masters champion Phil Mickelson, who will head to Augusta today bouyed by a thrilling victory in the Houston Open.
But, as the brilliant left-hander was putting the finishing touches to his first win in 12 months in a compelling showdown against fellow American Scott Verplank yesterday, his management team were revealing how close he came to giving up golf last year because of arthritis.

Mickelson is the real deal. Humbled by cancer and arthritis. I’ve followed him on the pro circuit and I was attracted to his quiet and humble qualities. I was surprised to see he won the Houston Open. He was back in 63rd place in the first round.
He has no soul. He has merely honed his skills through repetition.
He has not made an honest statement in public in decades.
Why should we humans care how well a robot plays golf? I'm more concerned about Iron Byron (Is "he" still doing well after testing all those golf balls?) than in Tiger.
If they could just find some of those technicians from Westworld they might be able to readjust whatever parts were tweaked out of place in that car wreck.
I actually hope Tiger never wins another tournament. He’s just too much of a jerk for the game.
Phil also meets with local soldiers if they request it. Found the thread here on FR a year ago. Man, how much more can you take if your wife AND mother(?) both suffer from breast cancer?
It’s amazing after all the adversity he’s faced how he’s managed to stay at or near the top of the money list. I like Mickelson. I imagine he’s very approachable.
I really wonder if the arthritis he got was just the body incapable of taking so much stress with the sickness at home.
Phil is a great guy. He sticks around and signs autographs and is always friendly with the crowd. NY crowds are usually tough but they treated Phil great last year at Bethpage, NY.
I’m not really anti-Tiger like a lot of people. He has done a lot for soldiers, especially the previous golf tourney months back where an active soldier went to Dubai to golf with him and the soldier swears by him. Also made visits to Ft Bragg and Benning because his dad used to be a Green Beret.
Sure he cheated on his wife. But he’s not like Jalen Rose, who’s anti-white and got caught drunk driving. He’s no OJ, who killed his wife. Visited Obama but controlled his words because he knows he has Republican friends.
He’s single and he can date whom he wants to. My problem is if he’s 1) a fag dating another fag 2) dating someone underage. He’s not.
I will never forget sitting in the clubhouse at Torrey Pines watching Phil win it in 2004. The place was electric with excitement as many there knew him personally.
He pretty much grew up playing there as a kid. I think someone else played there as a kid as well. One of the best muni golf courses in the country too.
Phil had the low rounds of the day for both Saturday and Sunday (63 and 65). Good for him heading into The Master’s. I think it is wide open this year, but of the big names, I’d rate Mickelson’s chances as best.
Notice how desperately the golf announcers are trying to deify Michelson.
All this Tiger bashing makes no sense at all. I guess all those throwing stones have been personally adversely affected by Tiger’s marital woes.
What I can’t stand in this whole Tiger fiasco is the feigned outrage of the sports reporters. Are people going to credibly tell me that these Sports reporters did not know that Woods was chasing every blond haired skirt under the sun? Either they are lying or are lousy reporters. In either case, not good.
I used to be a Tiger fan but not anymore. Perhaps others are as bad or worse than Tiger with the women. Perhaps even Phil, who knows. What I do know about Phil is that he put his career on hold to take care of his breast cancer ailing wife, while Tiger was out chasing skirts. I’ve always been a fan of Phil and now even more so.
There is a double standard with Tiger fan boys and the (liberal) sports media. Anything Tiger does is great and anything Mickelson does is bad.
Tiger had his knee operated on a week before the PGA started testing for steroids. He was out for about 8 months - time enough to purge roids from the system. Since then he has sucked. The PGA probably freaked because they knew he was connected to the steroid “doc” in Montreal. I think the whole marriage blow up may have been a smoke screen to cover up his relationship with that doc.
The Tiger fan boys say Mickelson is fat. Wrong. The guy powerlifts and his club head speed is as fast as a 26 year old. Phil is long as anyone - he pounds the ball. Tiger sucks now because he is probably off the juice. My guess is the PGA will let him get back on.
The Tiger fan boys were saying Phil with his arthritis and sick wife needed to deal with it but made excuses for Tiger’s lousy play saying a divorce was far more traumatic.
Most people do not like steroid users. No it is not rumors. Tiger had a close relationship along with other athletes with Dr. Anthony Galea - steroid doctor to the sports stars. Galea was indictedin Buffalo in October 2010. Linked to Tiger Woods, AROD aka ARIOD (know steroid user), Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran
Guess you never watch golf either. Tiger is 99.9% of the time the deity and Michaelson is the oaf due to the sports media liberal bias. Where did Olberman come from?
It’s the selectivity of the venom that makes me wonder.
If it’s your guy, your team, your sport then no offense is important.........
Trivia - Phil and death row resident Scott Peterson were golf team mates in either high skoo or college (I think it was pre-college, because Peterson wasn’t good enough).
Yes, I’ve heard about the roid angle. I’ll have to read up on that and honestly the proof will be in the pudding. If Tiger does not dominate again post steroids testing, then we’ll know what was up with him. As it is now, he no longer appears invincible and Jack’s record of 18 majors is looking safer when this time two years ago it was only a question of when it would be broken. Not if. This will be an interesting year for Tiger because he did have an excuse last year with the divorce. Frankly, I thought he should take the whole year off last year. In retrospect, I’ll bet he thinks he should have also. That year tarnished his golfing credentials more than the scandals.
